HELLBOY: THE CROOKED MAN Clip Features a Creepy Snake Attack Scene
Here’s a clip from the upcoming film Hellboy: The Crooked Man that features a spooky scene in which Hellboy watches a woman floating in the air being brutally attacked by a giant snake.
This is an interesting clip to release. While it shows that the movie is going to lean into the horror of the world, which the filmmakers have talked about, it also shows some really weird editing choices. When you watch the clip you’ll see what I mean.
When I watched the clip, my first thought was, “Oh, so that’s why they are releasing it directly to Digital and skipping theaters.”
The distribution company probably saw what happened with The Crow remake and they lost faith in Hellboy: The Crooked Man having a decent theatrical run.
IGN has confirmed that the movie is skipping a theatrical release in the U.S. in favour of a Digital debut. The plan is to release it on October 8 for $19.99 as a two-week exclusive to "all electronic sell-through partners" (meaning platforms like Amazon and Fandango). Then, it hits VOD on October 22nd for the low, low price of $6.99.
SciFiNow recently spoke to Hellboy: The Crooked Man's lead Jack Kesy and was asked what he hopes fans take from this movie. He said:
"I don’t know. Honestly, I try to stay out of people’s heads and what they feel and what they think. Obviously, I would love for them to love it and be like 'Wow, these people went for it, it’s dark, it’s scary' and actually, you know, maybe even enjoyed it on a different level."
"I don’t want to say they were moved, because that’s preposterous, but perhaps, enjoyed it differently from every other movie. I don’t know what people think or feel anymore, but I do hope they love it."
Hellboy: The Crooked Man stars Jack Kesy and is “set in the 1950s and costars Adeline Rudolph (Resident Evil) as a rookie agent of the BPRD who teams up with Hellboy to protect the residents of Appalachia from the creepy Crooked Man, who is collecting souls for the devil.”
The movie was helmed by Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance and Crank co-director Brian Taylor. The script was written by franchise creator Mike Mignola and Chris Golden.
Mignola previously talked about the film calling it the most faithful adaptation yet. The Crooked Man producer Les Weldon previously talked about casting him in the role:
"We went on a long soul-searching expedition to find the right Hellboy, and we knew that this Hellboy was gonna be a very moody, very kind of dark and creepy movie. There's no gloss, nothing like that.
“And Jack, look, I had worked with Jack before, as had other guys in our company, and we sort of came to the same conclusion that that sort of personality he has was gonna work really nicely for that film."
Mignola previously talked about director’s dark horror vision of the film, saying: “His intention is to make a horror movie, so that’ll be nice. That’ll be interesting. I read the new draft of the screenplay yesterday, and yes, it is definitely R.
“It’s the first Hellboy script that I read and I went, ‘Oh, it’s a horror movie,’ which is what I wanted. Taylor does not have a reputation as a horror movie director.
“But, so far, we’ve had two horror movie directors make Hellboy movies and we’ve never gotten a horror movie. For years, we’ve been saying, if you’re going to make a Hellboy movie, make it small. And the perfect story to do that with is my personal favorite, ‘The Crooked Man.’ I think it’s one of the best things I’ve ever written.
“It’s beautifully illustrated by Richard Corben, and it’s a solid story that doesn’t involve a million different characters. Everybody actually agreed from the very beginning, ‘Yes, we want to do that one.’
“Budget-wise, it’s good because it’s a lower budget kind of a story. It’s not the Hellboy origin. It’s not Hellboy saving the world. It’s not huge. It’s a subtle, dark, little folk horror story.”
The movie also stars Adeline Rudolph (Resident Evil), Jefferson White (Yellowstone) as Tom Ferrel, Leah McNamara as Effie Kolb, Joseph Marcell as Reverend Watts, Hannah Margetson as Cora Fisher, and Martin Bassindale as the Crooked Man, among others.
