HELLPOINT Impressions: Great Ideas Can’t Burn All These Bugs
In the growing popularity of games like Dark Souls, Blood Borne and Nioh, Hellpoint, at first glance, looks like a futuristic knock off, but it shows a lot of real promising potential.
The first thing to notice about the game is it’s looks. The aesthetic is a little simple and bare, but it is good at creating a futurescape fantasy world. The graphics look pretty good overall, and the motion and animation of characters are pretty solid, especially for the size of the development team. I think a little bit more enemy variety could’ve been nice, but so far, things are good.
The actual combat feels a little off here or there, but it does it’s job just fine. I think a lot more explanation on how combat should feel and be approached would’ve been better for this game, because otherwise players are just thrown in and figure it out on their own. One of the other core parts of combat is the actual stats of the player. It is refreshing to see a simple and direct upgrading system to increase and improve stats based on the currency you’ve accumulated by killing and finding things. Being able to make changes to stats that feel low or wanting to greatly improve things so easily is a great way to approach character growth.
The reason why this isn’t a review is because as of now the game has extremely bad game-breaking performance issues. The major problem I had was that every time I died, my character would be stuck in the death animation, making my character jitter around and make his death noise forever. I had no way to escape the game except for closing steam or turning off my computer. I tried this multiple times and tried different types of death and every time the same issue would happen. Looking online, other people also had various problems that would really screw with the game.
All this being said, I hope that these issues can be fixed and I will be returning to the game with a full review in a few weeks. Stay tuned and let us know what you think of the game so far, but as of now I wouldn’t recommend purchasing it until the bugs are fixed.
