Henry Cavill Breaks Silence on His DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE Cameo; Shawn Levy and Ryan Reynolds Also Comment

Deadpool & Wolverine had so many fun cameos it’s hard to keep track of them all, from big name actors returning to iconic roles they made famous, to stars realizing their roles for the first time in spectacular fashion.

One such “newcomer” was Henry Cavill (Man of Steel, The Witcher). His scene was quick, but it was a lot of fun. As Deadpool traveled through timelines looking to collect a Wolverine to bring back to his time, he saw many of them played by Hugh Jackman. But one was played by Henry Cavill, and he was a great substitute.

Cavill shared a photo of himself in the role in a recent social media post, in which he said, "To be safe, I shaved the moustache off for this one. Just the moustache."

This was a nod to the flack Warner Bros. and DC received when Cavill had to return to the set of Justice League (2017) to do reshoots while he was also shooting the film Mission: Impossible – Fallout. The actor’s M:I contract had him agree to donning a mustache for his role, so WB was left with the option of digitally erasing the facial hair in post-production, and it wasn’t great.

Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy talked about Cavill’s casting in a recent interview, saying:

"If we're going to talk about him, we must call him by his actual credited name, the Cavillrine, which Ryan coined. I knew it was undeniable as soon as Ryan came up with that term.

“He said 'yes' right away because he knew it would be subversive and playful. It was also with a lot of affection for him and his body of work, and playing with his legacy as a DC hero now that he's appearing as a variant of a Marvel hero."

Reynolds also chimed in on the decision, explaining:

"It was the first day of shooting, and it was born of the reality which is, 'Who on Earth do you cast?' I can't think of a more impossible and frustrating role to recast than Wolverine.

“As an actor, it would be awful and intimidating, and you'd need to take it in a different way, but if you had to do it, and replace the guy who's made it canon in every way, shape, and form on-screen and off wasn't available, Henry Cavill would be pretty good."

And he was good! I love thinking back to the jokes and fun little things the film was able to keep secret until opening night.

I have only seen the movie once, and I’m ready to watch it again so I can catch a few more of those hidden gems. Deadpool & Wolverine is currently in theatres everywhere.
