Henry Cavill Is Playing a Spy Again in McG’s New Action Comedy with Kevin Hart
Apparently, Henry Cavill just can’t stay out of the spy business. The actor may have missed his shot at becoming James Bond, but he’s built a pretty impressive collection of secret-agent roles anyway.
After playing spies in Mission: Impossible – Fallout, The Man From U.N.C.L.E., and Argylle, Cavill is heading back into espionage for a fourth time. This time, though, things are getting considerably more funny.
Cavill is currently filming an untitled action spy comedy from McG, the director of Charlie’s Angels and Terminator Salvation, with Kevin Hart co-starring.
The story reportedly follows Cavill and Hart as two rival spies who cross paths in one of the least glamorous places imaginable for a pair of secret agents: a Lamaze class.
Their pregnant wives, played by Justine Lupe and Aja Naomi King, quickly become friends, forcing the competing spies into each other’s lives.
This should be fun with Cavill and Hart playing opposite each other. Cavill can bring his straight-faced action hero energy while Hart brings that high strung energy and causes chaos around him.
Jason Isaacs, who recently appeared in The White Lotus, is also part of the cast. Hart is producing the movie alongside Ryan Reynolds and Shawn Levy.
It’s also amusing that Cavill keeps finding his way into spy movies considering how closely his name has been connected to James Bond over the years. He was famously among the finalists for 007 before Daniel Craig landed the role roughly two decades ago.
At 42, Cavill has pretty much ruled out starting a run as Bond now, but he hasn’t completely closed the door on entering that world in another capacity. When Heat Magazine asked him earlier this year about playing 007, Cavill explained:
"I didn’t turn the role down – it just wasn’t the right time. What actor wouldn’t love to be Bond? But at 42, I’d probably be considered a bit old to start now. I would love to be a Bond villain, though. If it was the right character, I think that would be fascinating to explore."
Cavill as a Bond villain could be a lot of fun, but for now, the future of 007 appears to be moving toward someone else.
Rumors surrounding the next James Bond have been picking up, with Slow Horses star Jack Lowden becoming one of the more interesting names in the conversation.
Whatever happens with 007, Cavill has plenty keeping him busy. He’ll next be seen in Highlander, and he continues working on bringing Warhammer 40,000 to the screen.
