Henry Cavill’s VOLTRON Movie Targets 2027 Release Window
Fans have been waiting a long time to see Voltron return in a big live-action adventure, and now there’s finally a clearer idea of when it’ll arrive. The upcoming adaptation starring Henry Cavill has officially landed a release window, meaning the iconic robot lions are gearing up for their big screen comeback sooner than some might’ve expected.
The live-action Voltron movie is currently targeting a 2027 release. While Amazon MGM Studios hasn’t announced an exact date yet, the timeline confirms that the project is progressing steadily after years of development.
The studio picked up the distribution rights in 2022, and things moved quickly from there. Production kicked off in Australia in late 2024 and wrapped by the middle of 2025.
With an epic action film that centers on massive robotic lions that merge into a towering warrior, it makes sense that the movie would need a lengthy post-production process to bring all that large-scale spectacle to life.
The film will feature an impressive cast led by Henry Cavill, who is reportedly playing King Alfor. Joining him are Rita Ora as Haggar the Dark Witch and Sterling K. Brown as the villainous Zarkon.
The ensemble also includes Daniel Quinn-Toye, Alba Baptista, John Harlan Kim, Tharanya Tharan, and Samson Kayo. Additional cast members include Tim Griffin, Laura Gordon, Keanu Karim, Nathan Jones, and Kevin Spink, along with Becki Cross Trujillo, Roberto Zenca, and Matthew Scully.
The movie is directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber, who previously helmed high-energy films like Red Notice, Central Intelligence, and Skyscraper. Thurber also co-wrote the script with Ellen Shanman, and he’s producing alongside Todd Lieberman, Bob Koplar, and David Hoberman.
For longtime fans, this project marks the first major live-action take on the property since the franchise exploded in popularity during the 1980s. The original Voltron animated series debuted in 1984 and ran for more than 100 episodes.
It followed a group of pilots who controlled five robotic lions that could combine into the massive warrior Voltron to defend the universe from villains like King Zarkon and the sorceress Haggar.
Since then, the franchise has popped up in several different forms, including Voltron: The Third Dimension, Voltron Force, and Voltron: Legendary Defender on Netflix, along with comics and video games that kept the mythology alive for new generations.
If everything stays on schedule, fans won’t have to wait much longer to see how this live-action version brings the legendary robot lions to life.
With Cavill leading the cast and a massive effects-driven story at its core, the 2027 release window suggests that the Voltron movie could finally deliver the epic cinematic adaptation fans have wanted for decades.
