Here's a Great AVENGERS 4 Fan Theory on How Erik Selvig Could Be Crucial to the Plot
I’ve read and discussed a lot of fan theories rabout the events of Avengers 4, but I’ve got a pretty cool new one to share with you today. It involves the character Erik Selvig (Stellan Skarsgard) and how he could play a crucial role in the plot of the film.
The theory comes from Reddit user mushbert, and he digs deep and offers us a very well-thought-out and thorough theory that I think a lot of you will enjoy.
After taking a crack at proving that all of Selvig's jumbled notes from his chalkboard in Thor: The Dark World are future events that he predicted in the MCU, it’s explained that when Selvig was under the power of the Mind Stone from Loki's Scepter, he was given the foresight of all of the pertinent information about the events that were about to unfold.
This leads to the theory that Selvig knew about "The Snap," which would cause half of the universe to be wiped out of existence. It’s speculated that these people that turned into dust, aren’t necessarily dead, but they aren’t really alive either creating what is called a “Schrodinger's cat” scenario. They could be stuck in some kind of limbo.
The theory then gets into to the “Fractal Gateways Connecting Mutipal Branes” section of the Selvig’s chalk board which allows for “a magical or technological doorway that connects two distant locations separated by space-time. It usually consists of two or more gateways, with an object entering one gateway leaving via the other instantaneously.” All of this relates to quantum mechanics, which as you know is something that has been explored in the Ant-Man films which will most likely play into the events of Avengers 4.
Here’s where things get fun. The theory brings up “The Fault,” and points out that “The Snap” could have “created a tear in the universe” or “a rift in the space-time continuum” that has exposed the MCU to alternate universes.
It then dives into how the events of Avengers 4 could lead to a battle between two gauntlets that could lead to a larger rip in the universe “which could be a means to introduce a new MCU reboot of the Fantastic 4 and/or the X-Men and lead into the events of Guardians of the Galaxy 3.”
This is seriously some pretty cool and far out stuff. If you want, you can read the theory in it’s entirety below. Check it out and then tell us what you think!
Erik Selvig’s Predictions (written on chalkboard) That Have Come True:
Phase Transition: A phase transition is the transformation from one phase or state of matter to another. Phase Transition is a key plot point of Ant-Man and The Wasp. Perhaps the tech used to “Phase Transit” is combined with other MCU tech to travel between dimensions and/or time simultaneously, perhaps by using the Ant-Man’s suit with the Binary Augmented Retro Framing tech
616 Universe: An Easter egg, but an important one, it lets us know that Eric Selvig is aware of the existence of a multiverse. The MCU universe borrows many elements from the stories of the 616 universe.
The Crossroads: The Crossroads is an other-dimensional reality where the traditional laws of physics do not apply. The Crossroads serves as a nexus point to an infinite number of alien dimensions, and there is even a signpost guiding all the explorers to the many different destinations - This appears in “Thor: Ragnarok”. Thor, Loki, and The Hulk are trapped at a place called Sakaar that seems very similar to the crossroads of the comics "Fear not, for you are found. You are home, and there is no going back. No one leaves this place. But what is this place? The answer is Sakaar. Surrounded by cosmic gateways, Sakaar lives on the edge of the known and unknown. It is the collection point for all lost and unloved things. Like you. But here on Sakaar, you are significant. You are valuable. Here, you are loved." "Nah, nothing makes sense here, man. The only thing that does make sense is that nothing makes sense." - Korg. On Sakaar, time flows differently compared to most other worlds. This was shown when Loki was tossed onto Sakaar only seconds before Thor, but loki arrived at Sakaar two weeks before Thor did. As well as this The Grandmaster claimed that he would be "millions of years old" compared to the outside time passed in the outside world.
Eclipse: Reference to Vormir where the Red Skull watched over the soul stone in Avengers: infinity War
Dark Energy: Appears in Thor: The Dark World
Distance, Mass, and Gravity Forces: Appear in Thor: The Dark World
The Nine Worlds - Alfheim (Light Elves), Asgard (Thor's world), Hel (Realm of the Dead), Jotunheim (Frost Giants), Midgard (Earth), Muspelheim (Realm of Demons), Nidavellir (Dwarves), Svartalfheim (Dark Elves), Vanaheim (sister-race to Asgardians): All these have all been mentioned numerous times in the MCU but probably won’t play that big a part in Avengers 4. This is not much of an Easter egg, it simply shows he is aware of the nine realms existence, and their imminent collision in “Thor: The Dark World”.
HOWEVER, one realm in particular, mentioned on the board does point towards future events: Muspelheim (Realm of Demons) was ruled by Sultur, the fire demon/creature who came back to life and destroyed Asgard during the events of “Thor: Ragnarok”.
Simonson's Theory of Relativity & The introduction of the Stormbreaker weapon: happens in “Avengers: Infinity War”. This Easter egg is a reference to Walt Simonson, who is a famed Thor comic writer and artist of issues #337-382. He is particularly well known for the introduction of Beta Ray Bill. He has also worked on other Marvel titles such as X-Factor and Fantastic Four.In the comics, Stormbreaker is actually Beta Ray bills weapon. Stormbreaker came into creation following the fight between Thor and Beta Ray Bill at Skartheim. After the battle, Bill began to feel guilt over his victory, now feeling that Mjolnir was Thor's by right. In a compromise, as Bill fairly won the battle, Odin had the Dwarves of Nidavellir create a new hammer made for the cyborg Korbonite warrior, crafted from the same Uru metal as Mjolnir. With the assistance of Eitri and other dwarf blacksmiths, they forged Stormbreaker.
The Alignment. The Alignment of Asgardian worlds/realms that occurs every 5,000 years and forms the Cosmic Eclipse, aka The Convergence). Event takes place during “Thor: The Dark World”
Nexus of All Reality: This could also be him making the connection that Sakaar = The Nexus = The Crossroads. The Nexus is a cross-dimensional gateway, which provides a pathway to any and all possible realities*. This could also be a reference to multi-dimensional travel taking place during Avengers 4, perhaps by using the quantum realm in this location or through some other means. The reason the avengers would do this is in an attempt to gather infinity stones to power another gauntlet to do battle with Thanos and undo the events of infinity War (It is doubtful Time Travel will be a part of the movie as it is messy and leaves too much room for plot holes. The leaked set video of the cast back at the battle of New York is much more likely a grieving Tony Stark using his BARF technology to alter his memory in an attempt to deal with the trauma these bad memories have caused him. (The cast appears to be laughing and joking in these scenes, which is not an appropriate emotional response when at the centre of a warzone, it is more reflective of Tony losing it and desperately trying to forget all his failures, perhaps this scene follows the death of a number of Avengers? Tony says in Iron Man 3 while showing his final moments with his parents to students to demonstrate his tech “That’s how I wish it happened”)*
Erik Selvig’s Predictions That May Happen in Avengers 4:
Phase Transition: Perhaps the tech used to “Phase Transit” is combined with other MCU tech to travel between dimensions AND through time simultaneously, perhaps by using Ant-Man’s suit with the Binary Augmented Retro Framing tech and a powerful energy source such as an arc reactor. Particularly if this all took place in a location like Sakaar.
The Fault: Could Thanos’s Snap which damaged the gauntlet also have created a tear in the universe or could the events of Avengers 4 a battle between two gauntlets lead to a tear in the universe which could be a means to introduce a new MCU reboot of the fantastic 4 and/or the X-Men and lead into the events of Guardians of the Galaxy 3. The Fault is a rift in the space-time continuum of the Earth-616 universe that has exposed it to alternate universes, including Cancerverse. In the comics It was created from the combined energies unleashed in the battle between Black Bolt and Vulcan and was stabilized by the Guardians of the Galaxy to prevent it from expanding.
Kyle + Yost = X: Craig Kyle and Christopher Yost are writers of the "Messiah War" saga, which was described to be a defining moment in the "X-Universe" - featuring amongst others: X-Factor, Cable, and Deadpool. We have already seen Cable and Deadpool feature in their own movie recently, so this Easter egg has already partially come true. Even if it is not directly tied into the MCU, Twenty-First Century Fox and Walt Disney Company shareholders have approved a deal to allow Disney to purchase Fox assets which is soon to be finalised. It is doubtful the X-men or mutants will feature directly in Avengers 4 but perhaps we will see the creation of mutants being alluded to, or Easter eggs suggesting they will become a part of future MCU movies, this could be the “big turning point” the movies have been building up to and the directors have all talked about in interviews.
The original X-Factor line-up includes Cyclops, Beast, Jean Grey, Angel, and Iceman. Over the years many popular Marvel characters, like Marvel Girl (Could Captain Marvel actually be Jean Grey/The Phoenix/Marvel Girl?), Caliban, and Leech, and many others have also joined the group. Eventually, a new X-Factor team was formed by the government, which included Havok, Multiple Man, Mystique, and Quicksilver, perhaps Quicksilver could be also be resurrected following the events of Avengers 4.
Fractal Gateways Connecting Mutipal Branes: Another Easter egg possibly alluding to the events of Avengers 4: This is a scientific reference to interdimensional travel through the quantum realm
A Fractal - a curve or geometric figure. Fractals are useful in modeling structures in which similar patterns recur at progressively smaller scales.
A Gateway - a magical or technological doorway that connects two distant locations separated by space-time. It usually consists of two or more gateways, with an object entering one gateway leaving via the other instantaneously.
A Mutipal - It is a fundamental property of many binary operations, and many mathematical proofs depend on it.
A Brane in string theory and related theories such as supergravity theories, is a physical object that generalizes the notion of a point particle to higher dimensions. Branes are dynamical objects, which can propagate through space-time according to the rules of quantum mechanics.
Schrödinger's cat: Could this be a reference to the 50% of people who were dusted following the snap, they are not quite alive but not quite dead? Perhaps stuck inside the soul stone in a state of limbo?
Theory of Relativity: Einstein’s Theory of Relativity allows for time travel, so perhaps this could be a reference to Time Travel taking place in Avengers 4, but its generally understood that time travel isn’t actually possible as it creates paradox’s, unless of course time travel also takes places with the avengers travelling inter-dimensionally at the same time as they travel backwards in time. This would allow alterations to the past, which would only affect the timeline that was travelled back to. Otherwise time travel could potentially have unknown devastating consequences on their own timeline.
How Erik Selvig Knows All:
The mindstone gave him an immense amount of information, Loki allowed it to when he had him under his control in order for him to build the portal device during the Battle of New York, all that information was too much for his mind to handle and this drove him mad. Hence why nobody pays him much attention anymore. However it is clear he will play an important role in defeating Thanos.
Additional Note: “Dr. Strange’s Plan - 14,000,605” In 2012 comic Fantastic Four hit #605, there’s a story of Reed Richards building a machine with his father that can peep into the future. The FOURteen million 605 may be a reference to it. Another sly reference to the future introduction of the fantastic four perhaps? Here is the key observation we see in relation to Dr. Strange’s plan, he knew that the fight scene which was about to take place after his vision would not be successful. Therefore, the important events that were to follow were not the method in which the group attempted to battle and subdue Thanos to remove the Infinity Gauntlet but the conversations that took place during the fight. Thanos being made to feel guilty and questioned on his reasons by the hero’s was the important chess move Dr. Strange played. The way they ultimately beat Thanos in Avengers 4 is not by beating him in Battle, but by Thanos succumbing to his grief over murdering his daughter Gamoro. The pointlessness of the untold destruction of life that he caused will eventually become clear to him; his theory of balance will be proved wrong. He will gain an understanding of love and empathy through the emotions he is feeling over his own loss of Gamora. He will repent and sacrifice himself to right all his wrongs and save the universe from a greater power which now threatens it, because of his actions, the greater threat will be Cosmic beings, or “The Fault”. Not all the dead are gone for good; their souls are maybe stuck in limbo - in the soul stone. Thanos seems to enter the soul stone involuntarily, perhaps further conversations and berating’s from the souls within are what drives him to undo all the bad he has done or to purposefully lose and allow the Avengers to defeat him. He realises the power given to him by the gauntlet is not worth the downsides. The life of being a god, the master of reality, the creator, and destroyer of all is a lonely life. This leads to a second time finger snap, either by Thanos or one of the avengers and that second immense release of power maybe what leads to the universe splitting or cracking and the appearance cosmic entities, of the fault, and a new reboot of marvel characters joining the MCU.
What do you all think? Anything you would add or disagree with?
Some other quotes by Eric Selvig: "I have a lot of work to do.. the foster theory.. a gateway to another dimension..It's unprecedented. Isn't it?" - End Credits Scene talking to Fury.
