Here's How BLACK PANTHER: WAKANDA FOREVER is Changing Namor's Lore
This past weekend during Comic-Con, Marvel released the first trailer for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and it offered us our first look at Tenoch Huerta in the role of Namor the Sub Mariner. We’ve now learned something new about this character that changes his lore up from the comics.
In the comics, Namor is from the underwater kingdom of Atlantis, but that’s not the case with the MCU. It was recently revealed in a press release for Black Panther merch that in the MCU Namor is from "Talocan", which is rooted in the mythical Aztecan aquatic paradise of Tlālōcān. This makes the lore more in line with Huerta’s Mexican heritage.
Tlālōcān is described in several Aztec codices as “a paradise, ruled over by the rain deity Tlāloc and his consort Chalchiuhtlicue. It absorbed those who died through drowning or lightning, or as a consequence of diseases associated with the rain deity.” Obviously, Marvel is changing that up to fit their own story and character purposes. But, it’s an interesting change, one that I think will work out fine. The trailer that was released for the movie showed an impending conflict between Wakanda and Talocan.
Huerta recently talked to Variety about putting on his Namor costume for the first time, saying: "I mean, everybody pretends to be a superhero or to be part of [these] movies, and then you are part of it. And then you are the superhero, and then you are wearing the costume. It's your skin, your voice, your brain, your talent, your story. It's overwhelming.”
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is being directed by Ryan Coogler, and the movie will bring back Danai Gurira, Letitia Wright, Daniel Kaluuya, Winston Duke, Lupita Nyong’o, Florence Kasumba, Angela Bassett, and Martin Freeman.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is set to hit cinemas on November 11, 2022.
