Here's How to Fix GOLDENEYE 007 Controls on Switch

At the end of last week, GoldenEye 007 from the Nintendo 64 made a comeback. Over on the Nintendo Switch, fans were given a pretty straightforward port with the one addition being online multiplayer via Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pass. Meanwhile, Xbox fans got access to a remastered version without the online capabilities (hopefully we can get that changed with cross-play enabled). The problem with the Switch version is that the controls suck.

The N64 controller was a whole different beast from modern ones. It only had one joystick and a weird “M” design. GoldenEye was developed for that and the straight port utilized for the Switch makes the controls feel very awkward. In modern games, you move your character with the left stick and the camera with the right stick. In GoldenEye, you only had one stick, so you moved back and forth with it and going left or right would turn you instead of strafing. Strafing and looking up and down were relegated to the C-buttons. This creates a disconnect when using a modern controller and makes it feel clunky. Yes, there are different controller mappings in the game, but I didn’t find any that alleviated the awkwardness for me.

Thankfully, the people over at Nintendo Life figured out how to make a modern controller work better for the Switch version of GoldenEye. Basically, you have two routes. With a Joy-Con, you can simply change your control scheme to 1.2 - Solitaire and then swap hands so the left Joy-Con is in the right hand and vice versa. If you prefer a Pro Controller or using Joy-Con in a grip, you’ll need to do a bit more work. You’ll still change to the 1.2 - Solitaire control profile in-game, but then you’ll have to navigate to the Controller Settings on your console where you can remap the controller. Just be aware that those settings are saved to the controller and will apply to all games unless you change them back. Of course, you can also hope to score one of the N64 controllers for the Nintendo Switch for a more authentic feel. Here’s the video guide they made and let us know if you’re enjoying the resurgence of the classic game.
