Here's The Reason Why Daredevil is Wearing His Black Suit Again in Season 3

A lot of fans have been wondering why Daredevil is back to wearing his black suit in the upcoming third season. I’ve heard some people say that they feel this is a step backwards in the series, but in actuality, it’s a step forward.

During a recent interview with Collider, Charlie Cox opens up about the costume that Matt Murdock wears in the show and explains why he abandoned the red superhero suit in favor of his stripped-down black suit.

“The thing with the costume has always been, for me, it sounds silly, but I really need to feel like, from a story point of view, it makes sense and it’s in keeping with the genre and the tone of the show.

“So the way we transitioned into the red costume at the end of season one, the thing that really sold it for me was the conversation Matt had with Father Lantom, where he says, ‘Sometimes it’s important for there to be a symbol to be feared by people.’ It keeps them in check, it allows them to remember why they behave in a moral way. That was the impetus for Matt to go and embrace this symbol, this iconic red suit.”

The actor then shared an “equally compelling reason” for Matt Murdock ditching the badass red suit:

“It’s not explicit, but my understanding of it is clear. Matt, for various reasons, no longer feels like he is deserving of it. It’s almost like he’s lost that privilege. And also that he is, in some ways, outgrown what it stood for. There’s also another reason why he cannot, literally can not wear the suit.”

We know that Murdock is at the lowest of lows and in a very dark place when we catch up with him in Season 3, so it makes sense that he’s not feeling worthy of the red suit. But, I imagine that by the end of Season 3 he’ll be feeling worthy again and back in the red suit.

It’s explained that the Catholic version of Murdock sees God as “quite cynical” and “almost vindictive,” and now he’s gone from “believing that he was Matt Murdock with this alter ego of Daredevil, to believing he’s Daredevil with a lie of Matt Murdock.” Cox goes on to say:

“It’s a very subtle shift but mentally it does some interesting things. It makes him a little bit more reckless early on, which is fun. He’s less concerned with being caught. There are scenes where I feel like there’s almost like an enjoyment to the recklessness of it all.”

As we’ve seen in the teasers that have been released for the series so far, Matt Murdock is going to fully embrace the devil, bury the lighter part of himself, and do whatever it takes to protect the city.

Daredevil Season 3 will be released on October 19 exclusively on Netflix.
