Hey Fox! Let's Get Moving on That New Season of THE X-FILES!

TVRant The X-Files by Joey Paur

The X-Files revival recently concluded with its sixth and final episode last night, and it completely left us with a major freakin’ cliffhanger! I was truly impressed by what creator Chris Carter and his team brought to these six episodes — it was like the series didn’t miss a beat! Each episode was carefully crafted and offered hardcore fans of the franchise exactly what they wanted to see. They even managed to give me a whole new favorite episode with "Mulder and Scully Meet the Were-Monster." It was freakin’ brilliant and I couldn’t be happier with what the creative team delivered. But you can’t end the series like that and not keep the story going!

Now that I’ve got a taste of The X-Files greatness again and it returned to very strong ratings, I don’t want it to end. This brief tenth season can’t be it! There needs to be more! The X-Files must live on! It would be such a waste if it didn’t.

Carter has said that he has already written a script for another standalone X-Files movie, which is great and I hope it happens! But I would much rather see at least six more episodes. The creator said in the past that he would like to continue the series, but that he’s waiting for Fox to come back and ask for more.

Fox CEO Gary Newman said at the time that the biggest issue with moving forward with more X-Files episodes is working around the schedules of David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson. Now I’m not asking for a full-on 20 episode seasons like the series used to be. That would be nice, but I’m just looking for at least six more episodes, and they should do it at least every couple of years or so. That seems like it would be doable.

When asked by SFX magazine before the revival aired if there would be another season, Duchovny said:

“I don’t know. I hate to disappoint, but I take things as they come. Each day on the set had its own challenges and charms and problems. But when I sat down and watched it, I saw that the show still worked and the characters still worked. I have never not believed in the frame of the show as being so flexible as to be almost infinite.
We have a show that can be comedy, drama, science fiction, mystery, thriller, horror and not feel like it’s a different show. Doing six is maybe not enough to show that flexibility, so maybe we have more to do. I don’t know, we’ll see. Having gone through it again, I think we’re all okay with moving forward with more. I don’t want to speak for everyone, but I would.”

He’s sounds incredibly optimistic there and he would obviously make it work if he could. Anderson, on the other hand, had a different tone:

“It’s possible but not probable. It will be an ongoing conversation. We have to see how it does and if people are enthusiastic about it and have the same interest. I think it’s all dependent on that.”

Well, I think the audience has spoken! The series held on to solid ratings and the fans loved what they saw! While a guest on The Ellen DeGeneres Show recently, right before the season finale aired, Duchovny was asked if he would do more X-Files episodes again, and this was his response:

"Yeah, I think we're all open to it. It's just a matter of getting everyone's schedules to jive. Gillian lives in London. I live...I don't know where I live. I live somewhere. Chris lives here (California). I would love to. I think we all would. We'll see what happens."

Unfortunately, there are currently no plans, which is crazy to me considering the way the season ended. I expected to hear news today that Fox had ordered a new season, but that's not what we got. Instead, entertainment president David Madden recently told Variety:

“We said before it aired that we would love to do more, and we are over the moon with the performance. So far, the response has been really encouraging. We haven’t talked to the talent yet about Season 2 in any more definitive way than we had prior to airing the show, but certainly, it seems like there’s an audience responding to the show that would love to see more episodes.”

Then, Carter added in a separate interview with THR:

"They're going to ask for more. The ratings were very good. They were happy with the show. I talked to Dana Walden today. She said they'd very much like more, but nothing's being negotiated yet."

Why the hell isn't Fox jumping all over this and getting a new season rolling!? I just want them to get rolling on it so we can see this story continue as soon as possible! It seems like all of the cards have fallen into place and if Fox wants to make another season, all they have to do is ask. So please, Fox, please reach out to Carter and the gang and get rolling on another season of The X-Files!

As for the cliffhanger we were left with for the season finale, Carter says that he knows where it's going.

"The X-Files traditionally ended with a cliffhanger, and we didn't want to do anything different. This just happens to be a very big cliffhanger. I have an idea of where the story goes."

Hopefully we get to see where that goes sooner rather than later. What did you all think about these past six episodes of The X-Files?
