Hideo Kojima Calls MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE - THE FINAL RECKONING Tom Cruise's "Desperate Struggle to Save Cinema Itself"
Leave it to Hideo Kojima to turn a trip to the movies into something poetic, existential, and gloriously over-the-top.
The legendary game developer recently caught a screening of Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning in IMAX, and he came away with more than just an adrenaline rush, he came away convinced that Tom Cruise might be the last true defender of the cinematic experience.
In a tweet that’s already making the rounds online, Kojima wrote:
“Went to see Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning in IMAX. It begins with Tom greeting the audience and ends with a glance he throws our way.
“This wasn’t a film about Ethan Hunt saving the world from the threat of digital domination – it was a film about Tom Cruise, putting his life on the line in a desperate struggle to save cinema itself, which is slowly vanishing from the world.”
Well, he’s not wrong! Cruise has basically become the patron saint of practical stunt work and theatrical exhibition in an age when studios are still chasing algorithm-friendly sludge.
Kojima continued:
“It was the movie of a man who lives and breathes film. I still want to see him keep making the impossible, possible. I hope this series continues. At 61, I’m proud to be a follower of Tom, who’s 62.”
While Paramount hasn’t confirmed if The Final Reckoning is actually the franchise’s final chapter, the title suggests a definitive end, and if that’s the case, it seems Kojima is hoping it’s more of a curtain call than a final bow, just like the rest of us.
In any case, you can always count on Kojima to spot the myth in the mayhem. Whether it’s game design or movie-watching, the man operates on another frequency, and in this case, it’s tuned squarely to Cruise’s cinematic crusade.
So, according to Hideo Kojima, The Final Reckoning is the latest battle in Cruise’s ongoing war to keep the lights on in the movie theater, and I kind of love that.
