Hideo Kojima Casts Bill Skarsgård as The Lead of PHYSINT, Which Aims to “Redefine Action Espionage”

Hideo Kojima has found the star of his next big espionage game. Physint will be led by Bill Skarsgård, the actor known for John Wick: Chapter 4, Nosferatu, and his terrifying run as Pennywise in the It films.

Kojima revealed the casting during the Xbox Tokyo Game Show 2026 Broadcast, where he shared updates on his projects with Xbox Game Studios.

While OD is "steadily taking shape" following continued performance capture this year, Kojima confirmed that Physint is also moving forward at its new home. "The project continues to make steady progress."

The game was originally being developed in partnership with Sony before Xbox acquired the project after Sony decided to cancel it. Despite that major change, Kojima’s ambitions for Physint certainly haven’t gotten any smaller.

Kojima describes it as "the culmination of more than 40 years of my career: a project that will redefine 'action espionage,' unbound by any existing genres in digital entertainment."

That’s a massive goal, but Physint is also a project that pulls Kojima back toward the kind of action espionage experience that defined Metal Gear Solid. Kojima previously explained that the idea came to him after becoming sick during the COVID-19 pandemic, when he realized how many fans still wanted him to create something in the vein of Metal Gear.

Now we know who will be at the center of it. Skarsgård will portray the lead character, joining previously announced cast members Charlee Fraser, Don Lee, also known as Ma Dong-seok, and Minami Hamabe.

Kojima explained his connection with Skarsgård and why the two decided to work together: "We are both long-time fans of each others' work, and we've decided to embark on this new adventure together."

Skarsgård feels like a fascinating fit for a Kojima game. He’s built a career playing characters who can be intimidating, strange, and unpredictable. Considering Kojima’s love of cinematic performances and memorable characters, there’s a lot of potential in seeing what the two create together.

Kojima also addressed Xbox’s involvement with the project following its move away from Sony, saying: "I would also like to thank our partners at Xbox for believing in our vision and walking this path toward the future alongside us."

He continued: "We are incredibly excited about the road ahead and look forward to sharing much more with you in the future."

Fans hoping to see Skarsgård sneaking around and snapping digital necks anytime soon should probably settle in for a long wait. Kojima said last year that Physint was still "another five or six years" away, and the publisher transition may have added some extra time to development.

So gameplay could still be a ways off. What we have now is a much clearer idea of what Kojima is building: a new action espionage game drawing from more than four decades of his career, with Skarsgård taking the lead and Xbox backing the project.

For anyone who has spent years hoping Kojima would return to the world of espionage games after Metal Gear Solid, Physint is becoming an interesting project to watch.
