HIGHLANDER Remake Faces Delays After Henry Cavill Sustains Injury
Fans eager to see Henry Cavill take up the sword in the long-awaited Highlander reboot may have to wait even longer. The actor has suffered an injury during pre-production, causing Amazon MGM Studios’ Highlander to push back its filming schedule.
According to Deadline, Cavill was hurt while training for the movie. The details of the injury and its severity haven’t been revealed, but the setback has forced the production to hit pause.
So, when will we actually see the new Highlander? Directed by Chad Stahelski, best known for the John Wick franchise, the film never had a firm release date. Back in 2023, industry chatter suggested a possible 2026 debut, but Stahelski himself later hinted at a 2027 or even 2028 release. Now, with filming delayed, fans might be in for an even longer wait.
The movie was originally slated to kick off this September, with cameras set to roll shortly after. Instead, production might not begin until early 2026, pushing the timeline out considerably.
For fans, the delay is going to be frustrating, but this is just where the production is at right now. The original Highlander (1986), directed by Russell Mulcahy, became a cult classic with its mix of sword battles, immortal warriors, and time-spanning storytelling.
It starred Christopher Lambert as Connor MacLeod and Sean Connery as Ramirez, delivering one of the most memorable fantasy action films of the era.
While Amazon has yet to release an official synopsis for Stahelski’s version, the director shared: “The movie is set in present-day New York and Hong Kong, with Cavill playing a 500-year-old sword master.”
The script, written by Michael Finch, has lined up an impressive cast alongside Cavill, including Russell Crowe, Marisa Abela, Karen Gillan, Djimon Hounsou, Dave Bautista, and Max Zhang. With Stahelski’s action pedigree and a stacked ensemble, the project has all the ingredients for something epic once cameras finally roll.
Until then, all fans can do is wait for updates on Cavill’s recovery and the project’s new schedule. Hopefully, when Highlander does finally arrive, it will be worth the wait. Personaly, I’m excited about this movie! I think Stahelski and Cavill will deliver something badass!
