Hilarious Trailer For HBO's Socially Distanced Satire COASTAL ELITES Starring Sarah Paulson, Bette Midler, and More
HBO has released the trailer for their upcoming “socially distanced satire,” Coastal Elites. The movie takes place from behind computers mostly and stars only five actors, but they are all fantastic, and I am here for it. Sarah Paulson (American Horror Story, Glass), Dan Levy (Schitt’s Creek), Bette Midler (Beaches, Hocus Pocus), Issa Rae (Insecure, The Lovebirds), and Kaitlyn Dever (Last Man Standing, Booksmart) star in the film, where “five characters make confessions under quarantine that touch on their lives during the 2020 pandemic and living in a world of deeply divided politics.”
Here are some character descriptions previously released by Deadline:
Midler plays Miriam Nessler, a long-time teacher in the New York City public school system, who loves her students, the New York Times and the theater, who finds herself in police custody.
Paulson plays Clarissa Montgomery, a YouTube personality filming episode 28 of her Mindful Meditations, hoping to soothe, inspire and heal her followers.
Kaitlyn Dever stars as Sharynn Tarrows, a young nurse from Wyoming who flies to New York to volunteer at a hospital at the height of the area’s COVID-19 crisis.
Dan Levy stars as Mark Hesterman, a young actor in West Hollywood videoconferencing with his therapist at a moment of peak career and personal stress.
Issa Rae plays Callie Josephson, a well-connected philanthropist whose prep school network leads her to the highest levels of government.
The movie is a comedic satire, that is pretty clearly left-leaning, and it definitely feels familiar to the discord we have been seeing throughout the pandemic among our own families, friends, and social media accounts. This trailer is a hoot, and I am excited to check it out. Watch the trailer below, and catch Coastal Elites on HBO on September 12th.
