HOME ALONE Director Chris Columbus Says Disney+'s Reboot is a Waste of Time

As you’ve probably heard, Disney+ is developing a reboot of the hit holiday film Home Alone. Lovable Jojo Rabbit co-star Archie Yates is set to star in reboot alongside Ellie Kemper (The Office) and Rob Delaney (Hobbs & Shaw).

The new Home Alone project is said to follow a “husband and wife who go to war with a young boy, Max. I assume Yates is playing Max, who is described as an “energetic, witty nine-year-old boy with a mischievous side. He feels wise beyond his years and has the personality to easily converse with adults—plus the uncanny ability to relentlessly push their buttons. But, he also displays a sense of innocence and a kind heart much like the original protagonist.”

Well, the director of the original film, Chris Columbus, is not a fan of the idea of a reboot and in a recent interview with Insider, he spoke out against the film calling it a waste of time:

“It's a waste of time as far as I'm concerned. What's the point? I'm a firm believer that you don't remake films that have had the longevity of Home Alone. You're not going to create lightning in a bottle again. It's just not going to happen. So why do it?”

Yep, he makes a great point there and he goes on to admit that he’s guilty of the same thing with Home Alone 2, saying:

“I can even be accused of it myself, with Home Alone 2. That movie is basically a remake of the first Home Alone. Does it need to exist? Yes, because some of those stunts make me laugh really hard, but I just don't believe it should be done.”

He then adds:

“Listen, have fun. I just feel, do something new. Life is short.”

I’m not really excited about the new Home Alone project but loved Yates in Jojo Rabbit, and I’ll watch it to support this kid. I think he’s going to give a fun and enjoyable performance. He’s just such a lovable and charming young actor.

Dan Mazer (Dirty Grandpa) is on board to direct the film from a script by Mikey Day and Streeter Seidell.
