HONEY, I SHRUNK THE KIDS Director Joe Johnston Is in Talks to Helm Disney's Next Sequel
The director of Disney’s original Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, Joe Johnston, is in negotiations to helm the studio’s revival sequel in the franchise, titled Shrunk, with Josh Gad set to star.
The story concept was originally pitched by Gad, and it will be the third sequel following the original film which was released in 1989. The other two films include Honey, I Blew Up the Kid and direct-to-video Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves. Johnston was not involved with either of the other sequels.
In the original film, Rick Moranis played a scientist father who builds a shrinking machine that accidentally shrinks his kids and their neighbors’ kids to a quarter of an inch in size. The kids then embark on an adventure through their backyard to get home, and along the way they have to fight to survive giant bugs and other obstacles.
The new movie will exist in the same world and continue the overall storyline. Gad takes on the role of Wayne’s grown-up son, Adam Szalinski, who follows in his father’s footsteps by not only becoming a scientist but also accidentally shrinking his children.
The film was originally being planned as a Disney+ film, but screenwriter Todd Rosenberg’s script is said to have “elicited enthusiasm from execs.” The plan is now to release the film theatrically.
I like Joe Johnston‘s work as a director, and it would be great if he came back to direct Shrunk.
