HOT SPOT Trailer Unleashes Noomi Rapace as a Cyber Witch in a Twisted AI-Controlled Future
The wild first trailer for Hot Spot has arrived, and it looks like audiences are in for a strange, stylish, and unsettling ride. The upcoming sci-fi thriller comes from Agnieszka Smoczyńska, the filmmaker behind the cult favorite The Lure, and it blends dystopian science fiction, murder mystery, horror, and noir detective storytelling into one intriguing package.
Set in a future where artificial intelligence has tightened its grip on society, Hot Spot follows a private investigator digging into a murder case that leads to something much larger. Along the way, the detective uncovers a rebellious underground group with the ability to challenge the all-powerful AI system controlling the world.
At the center of the story is Noomi Rapace, who appears to be playing a mysterious cyber witch caught up in the chaos. The trailer teases a visually striking world filled with surveillance, technology, and a growing sense of paranoia as secrets begin to surface.
The film also stars Andrzej Konopka (The Lure) and Reika Kirishima (Drive My Car). The screenplay was written by Robert Bolesto, who also collaborated with Smoczyńska on The Lure.
Bolesto previously spoke about the film's themes and the emotions driving the story, saying: “To me, ‘Hot Spot’ is a story where the main feeling is fear, just like in a horror movie. And in today’s world,”
That perspective certainly comes through in the footage. While the movie leans heavily into science fiction, the atmosphere feels rooted in anxiety and uncertainty, creating the kind of tension usually associated with horror.
Smoczyńska has described the project as a “personal blend of horror, science fiction and anti-detective story,” which is a pretty good indication that Hot Spot won’t be taking the traditional route. If her previous work is any indication, audiences can probably expect something imaginative, unpredictable, and visually distinctive.
Focus Features will release Hot Spot in theaters on August 21. The film will open opposite Insidious: Out of the Further, giving genre fans two very different flavors of horror to choose from that weekend.
The studio also has another highly anticipated genre project waiting in the wings with Werwulf from Robert Eggers, which is set to hit theaters on December 25.
