HOUSE OF THE DRAGON Season 4 Update Suggests Fans Won’t Be Waiting Quite as Long for the Final Chapter
Fans of House of the Dragon have already gotten used to long stretches between seasons, but there’s finally a little good news on that front. While HBO’s Game of Thrones prequel is still ending with Season 4, a new update suggests the gap between the final two seasons might not drag on quite as painfully as before.
According to a new report from Deadline, showrunner Ryan Condal has renewed his overall deal with HBO through 2029. Along with keeping him tied to the network for future projects, the report also sheds some light on the current timeline for the fantasy series.
The outlet says House of the Dragon Season 3 “will likely premiere in late 2027 or early 2028, leaving time on Condal’s deal for him to develop and produce new projects for HBO.”
Nothing has been officially locked in yet, but if that schedule sticks, it will mean the wait for Season 4 won’t stretch into another exhausting multi-year hiatus. Considering Season 1 premiered in August 2022 and Season 2 didn’t arrive until June 2024, fans will gladly take any improvement.
HBO confirmed earlier this year that House of the Dragon will conclude with its fourth season, making Season 3 the setup for the massive final showdown in the Targaryen civil war.
Condal originally served as co-showrunner during Season 1 before taking over solo beginning with Season 2. While some of his creative choices have sparked criticism from George R.R. Martin, who previously described their relationship as “abysmal,” the series itself has continued to pull huge ratings and score major Emmy and Golden Globe recognition.
And it sounds like Season 3 is aiming to go even bigger. During an appearance at CCXP Mexico, Condal teased what fans can expect from the upcoming season, saying:
“[Season 3] is a huge season. It’s the biggest we’ve made by any margin and by a wide measure. It is dark. It’s funny. It’s action-packed. It’s emotional. And, of course, it has lots and lots of dragons.”
He continued: “This season demanded the very best of everybody that collaborated to make it together, and I can’t wait for the world to experience it.”
Based on George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, the series takes place roughly 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones and chronicles the rise and collapse of House Targaryen during one of the bloodiest conflicts in Westerosi history.
Season 3 will see the return of Matt Smith, Emma D’Arcy, Olivia Cooke, Steve Toussaint, Rhys Ifans, Fabien Frankel, Ewan Mitchell, Tom Glynn-Carney, Sonoya Mizuno, Harry Collett, Bethany Antonia, Phoebe Campbell, Phia Saban, Jefferson Hall, Matthew Needham, Tom Bennett, Kieran Bew, Kurt Egyiawan, Freddie Fox, Clinton Liberty, Gayle Rankin, and Abubakar Salim.
The cast is also adding a few notable newcomers, including Tommy Flanagan as Lord Roderick Dustin, Dan Fogler as Ser Torrhen Manderly, and James Norton as Ormund Hightower.
With several Game of Thrones spinoffs still in development at HBO, the future of Westeros remains pretty crowded. But before fans start looking too far ahead, there’s still a dragon war to finish first.
House of the Dragon Season 3 premieres on HBO on June 21.
