How Jean-Luc Picard Is Affected by Not Being a Captain as He Embarks on a New Journey in STAR TREK: PICARD

This past weekend the first trailer for Star Trek: Picard was released and the fans loved it! How couldn’t you like what you saw in the trailer? It ended up being something even better than I thought it would be and I’m stoked!

Patrick Stewart has returned to reprise his role as Jean-Luc Picard, but this is a very different version of the character, one who has been shaped and changed from the choices he’s made in his life as a Starfleet Captain. Here he is no longer a part of Starfleet, but he still has a little more fight for justice in him.

So, what is it like for someone like Picard to embark on a new journey with Starfleet left behind him. When talking to Entertainment Weekly, producer Alex Kurtzman talked about this exact aspect of the character, saying:

“Because he’s no longer in Starfleet, he no longer carries the weight of that behind him. In some ways, it’s easier to be [a great man] when you’re a captain. But it’s an entirely different thing when you don’t have an army behind you. When you want to get something done and fight an injustice, how do you do that when you’re really only one man?”

Well, we all know Picard will find a way, and we know from the trailer that he will have a small team of people behind him helping him in his journey. It was also previously said that, “There are many things that haunt Picard. He’s a lot older and we’re not shying away from that at all — we’re dealing with a man who’s in a very different place in his life.”

In this next chapter of Picard’s life, he is going to embark on a mission to protect a mysterious and powerful young woman named Dahj (Isa Briones) who shares some kind of a connection with him. He assembles a small crew for a little galaxy-class or Sovereign-class flagship like the Enterprise. It’s not the best ship in the world, but it’ll get the job done.

His new crew includes cast members Santiago Cabrera as Cristobal “Chris” Rios, Michelle Hurd as Raffi Musiker, Alison Pill as Dr. Agnes Jurati, Harry Treadaway as Narek and Evan Evagora as Elnor.

The series will also include Star Trek veterans Brent Spiner as Data from Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Voyager’s Jeri Ryan as Seven of Nine, Jonathan Frakes as Will Riker, and Marine Sirtis as Deanna Troi. The Borg will also play a role in the series.

Star Trek: Picard comes to CBS All Access in early 2019.
