How Peter Claffey Went From Irish Rugby Standout to Playing Dunk in A KNIGHT OF THE SEVEN KINGDOMS
HBO’s Game of Thrones prequel A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is introducing fans to one of the most beloved characters from George R.R. Martin’s world, Ser Duncan the Tall, better known as Dunk.
Bringing the towering hedge knight to life is Peter Claffey, and his path to the role is a pretty cool one. Before stepping into Westeros, Claffey was on a completely different track as a rugby player in Ireland.
Television essayist fluffieduffie summed up the unlikely journey perfectly, saying, “The story of how Peter Clafy went from a rugby player to now the face of “Game of Thrones” is insane. “
Claffey was actually well known in rugby circles and was on the verge of turning professional. But even with that promising career ahead of him, he realized something wasn’t clicking.
The sport he had poured so much time into wasn’t making him happy, so he made a major life pivot. In 2019, he stepped away from rugby and enrolled at Bow Fleet Academy to study acting, throwing himself into auditions and training.
The gamble paid off quicker than most would expect. Just a few years after leaving rugby behind, Claffey landed his first on-screen role in the series Harry Wild in 2022. Not long after that, a huge opportunity came knocking when he auditioned to play Dunk in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
Even though Claffey is reportedly a big Game of Thrones fan, he tried to keep his expectations in check during the audition process. Still, things kept moving forward. First came the callback. Then another. Eventually the role was his.
Now Claffey has stepped into one of the best fantasy series that’s been produced, playing a character fans of Martin’s Dunk and Egg stories already love. It’s a massive leap from rugby pitches in Ireland to the armor of a legendary knight in Westeros.
