How The Events of AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR Will Dramatically Affect Rocket Raccoon
If you haven't seen Avengers: Infinity War you might not want to read this because it contains major spoilers.
If you've seen Avengers: Infinity War you know that the MCU will never be the same again. That final fifteen minutes of the film was overwhelmingly emotional as we watched several of our favorite characters unexpectedly die.
Some of the most surprising characters include Star-Lord, Drax, Groot, Gamora, and Mantis. These characters became a tight-knit family who loved each other in their own ways and were there for each other.
When talking about the first two Guardians of the Galaxy films, James Gunn explained that "The first movie was really about becoming a family," and the sequel was "about being a family. And what's harder, becoming a family or being a family? I think it's being a family."
The Guardians were a family. By the time the events of Infinity War came into play, the guardians had been together as a family for four years.
Rocket Raccoon, the poor little enraged rodent with a dark past of being experimented on, who was trying to find meaning in his life and his place in the universe, found a family that took him in to care for him. Now... well, now that family is gone.
Rocket Raccoon is once again alone in the universe. Everyone that he has come to love and accept as his family is dead. By the end of Infinity War, he only knows that Groot is gone, but he will eventually learn about the others.
This was just a heartbreaking thought for me. Rocket lost everything! How is he going to process this loss? How will it affect him? He seemed to bond with Thor a little bit, so maybe Thor will be there to help him through the hard times, but Thor just can't replace everything that he lost.
I wonder if this will play into what we will learn about Rocket in the future. James Gunn did previously say that we will see Rocket's history brought to life in a future MCU film and that it would be darker than what was in the comics:
“As you know, the MCU is one way of processing these characters. 616 is a different one. We are going to learn more about where Rocket comes from in the coming sagas. It’s going to be a little different from the comics. We already know a lot about from where he came from. It’s a little bit more horrible than what it is in the comics when you come down to it. We will learn more about that.”
In case you aren't aren't familiar with Rocket's comic origin, he underwent some brutal experiments. The goal of these experiments was to create an intelligent hybrid animal to look after mentally ill patients in an abandoned colony. So we're looking at an origin that's worse than that.
Maybe the events of Infinity War will spark the telling of this story. I don't know! We don't even really know what will happen in Avengers 4! Even if there's a way to change what happened or bring certain characters back, it still won't fix the mental anguish that Rocket will go through when he learns that everyone he loves is dead.
What do you all think about Rocket losing his entire family? How do you think that will affect him?
