HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON 2 Live-Action Sequel Already Set with 2027 Release Date

Even though Universal’s live-action How to Train Your Dragon hasn’t hit theaters yet as it’s set for June 13th, but the studio is clearly feeling very confident about it. So confident, in fact, they’ve already announced a sequel.

During Universal’s presentation at CinemaCon, filmmaker Dean DeBlois, who directed and co-wrote the beloved animated trilogy and is now leading the charge on the live-action remake, dropped the surprise news, and it’s set to be released in theaters on June 11, 2027.

Right after sharing the news, DeBlois handed things over to a full 43-piece orchestra led by Ricky Minor, which performed a sweeping piece from the new film’s score, which was awesome.

Earlier in the day, attendees got to watch the full film and it’s was met with a ton of positive reactions, so it sounds like this first movie is going to deliver a great and fun theatrical experience.

The original How to Train Your Dragon animated films were a massive success for DreamWorks, bringing in $1.65 billion globally and earning four Oscar nominations along the way. With DeBlois returning as writer, director, and producer, it’s safe to say the creative vision remains intact—even as the franchise evolves.

Using the books by Cressida Cowell as a jumping-off point, How to Train Your Dragon focuses on the special friendship between a young and unheroic Viking boy named Hiccup, and Toothless, an injured dragon he nurses back to health.

The movies chronicled Hiccup and Toothless’ quest to combat humanity’s prejudice against dragons, the ache of overcoming the loss of a parent, and first love.
