STAR TREK: STRANGE NEW WORLDS Stars Anson Mount and Rebecca Romijn Explain Why the Franchise Will Never Die
Star Trek has been part of pop culture for generations, and while fans have plenty of questions about what comes after Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, stars Rebecca Romijn and Anson Mount don't seem worried in the slightest.
In fact, they believe the franchise has earned a permanent place in entertainment, and they make a pretty convincing case for why it will keep thriving for years to come.
With Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 4 now streaming on Paramount+, I had the chance to speak with Romijn and Mount ahead of the premiere.
Naturally, I had to ask the question that's been hanging over the fandom lately. With no new Star Trek television series currently in active development, should fans be concerned about the future of the franchise?
Romijn's answer was filled with optimism, and it perfectly captured what Star Trek has always represented.
“As far as the future of Star Trek, I don't think Star Trek's ever gonna go away. The more divisive our nation becomes, the more imperative it is that we keep Star Trek alive.
“It's a reason for hope, especially passing it on to a younger generation and a version of the future that's optimistic and not scary or aggressive. So, I think it's going to always be relevant.”
Romijn believes Star Trek still has an important role to play. For her, the franchise continues to offer an inspiring vision of the future, one that resonates just as much today as it did when it first launched nearly six decades ago.
Mount agreed, and he shared an interesting bit of perspective that really puts the franchise's longevity into context.
“Yeah, it's an imperative. We were just in Italy, and somebody made us aware that Star Trek has been around for roughly 25% of the history of our nation. So, at this point, I think it's sort of baked into the cake of our gestalt.”
When you stop and think about that, it's pretty wild. Star Trek has become such an enduring part of American culture that it's difficult to imagine a future where it simply disappears.
Their comments line up with what several other major names connected to the franchise have said over the years. Most believe Star Trek will continue evolving rather than fading away, and that certainly seems like the most likely outcome.
Paramount is still working to bring the franchise back to theaters, proving there's plenty of interest in keeping Gene Roddenberry's universe expanding. But, they’ve certainly had there issues making that happen over the past several years.
That said, fans still have valid questions about what comes next. It's less about whether Star Trek will survive and more about what shape its future will take. How long will audiences have to wait before another live-action series is announced? Who will guide the next era of storytelling?
Current reports suggest Paramount is preparing for a leadership transition within the franchise's television division, potentially moving beyond Alex Kurtzman's tenure overseeing Star Trek on the small screen. That could open the door for a new creative voice to steer the franchise into its next chapter.
Kurtzman previously said that fans shouldn't be alarmed by the current slowdown, explaining that Paramount's ongoing merger with Warner Bros. Discovery has created plenty of moving pieces that need to be sorted out before new projects can move forward.
For now, though, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds remains one of the franchise's strongest entries, and if Romijn and Mount are right, this is far from the final voyage. The future may be uncertain, but if Star Trek has proven anything over the last 60 years, it's that it always finds its way back to the stars.
