Hugh Grant Was Terrified by the Intricate Animatronic Creatures in DUNGEONS & DRAGONS: HONOR AMONG THIEVES
With every clip and trailer I see for the upcoming adventure movie Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, I am more excited to finally watch it. I got to go to the immersive D&D Tavern Experience for the film at San Diego Comic-Con this past year, and that, along with the panel for the movie, really got me stoked for the story it’s going to tell.
One cool aspect of the movie is all the practical effects used throughout to bring the huge scale film to life. This will be awesome to see as a viewer, but I guess it got a little intense for one star of the film.
In a recent interview with Empire Magazine (via /Film), Hugh Grant, who plays Forge Fitzwilliam The Rogue, talked about the nature of filming the wild adventure movie, saying:
"Just when you thought you were doing a rather powerful or amusing little bit of acting, you'd realise there was a f**king dragon walking past you in the background, stealing your thunder. There was a lot of incredibly intricate, I don't know what you call it..."
After the interviewer suggested he was looking for the word "animatronics," Grant continued:
"Animatronics! Terrifying. A fish that eats babies! And suddenly the whole floor of the set would be quicksand! I wish I'd had my children with me. They would have liked that."
Any kid at heart would have loved that set! The cast of the film also includes Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page, Justice Smith, Sophia Lillis, Chloe Coleman, and Daisy Head. The movie was directed by Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, who also co-wrote the script, and it feels like they really captured the essence of D&D, and I think that both fans and newcomers to the fandom are going to love it. They took such a fun and humorous approach, and the cast seems to knock it out of the park.
Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves will premiere at the South by Southwest (SXSW) film festival on March 10, 2023, before opening in theaters three weeks later on March 31.
