Hugh Jackman Reveals What Convinced Him to Return to Play Wolverine in DEADPOOL 3 and What We Can Expect From the Character
Fans have been super excited since it was revealed that Hugh Jackman is returning to the role of Wolverine in Deadpool 3. This will be the first Deadpool movie in the MCU, and will be Jackman’s first return to the role after his “retirement” of the character. We’ve been wanting to see this matchup for years, but Jackman was adamant about moving on from playing the X-Man ever again.
Jackman has now opened up about what changed his mind and what brought him back in a recent interview with Variety. He said everything changed back in 2016 when he went to see Deadpool:
“I went to a screening of ‘Deadpool.’ I was 20 minutes in, and I was like, ‘Ah, damn it!’ All I kept seeing in my head was ‘48 Hours’ with Nick Nolte and Eddie Murphy. So it’s been brewing for a long time. It just took me longer to get here.”
At the end of August, during a road trip to the beach with his family, he finally made the decision. He called Reynolds, who’d been pleading “on the daily” for a Wolverine-Deadpool movie. “I think, actually, he’d given up,” Jackman said. “I think it was a big shock to him. There was a massive pause, and then he said, ‘I can’t believe the timing of this.’” Reynolds was about to meet with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige about Deadpool 3. With Jackman in, the rest is comic book movie history.
As for what we can expect from Jackman’s character, the actor told AP Entertainment (via CB):
"I can tell you I'm going to have the time of my life. I can tell you I've started back at the gym and I'm eating a lot, and I feel bad for the cast of The Music Man with the amount of protein shakes I'm having.”
"It's a lot of fun. It's been five years and I really never thought I'd come back. And I'm really, really excited to come back. I do know a little bit about the script but I'm not going to tell you."
The actor later answered a question of if Deadpool 3 will feature an angrier or gentler Logan. "There's no choice. He's definitely angrier, grumpy, and he's gonna take a lot of free shots at Ryan Reynolds, let me tell you" Jackman teased, before ending with, "Physically, that is."
It’s not clear what the new movie will be about. It’s not even necessarily going to be named Deadpool 3. When asked by Variety what he thought of the title, Jackman joked, “Well, not in my heart. I’m pretty sure Wolverine wouldn’t like that title.”
Whatever it ends up being called, we are stoked for it! Deadpool 3 is set to hit theaters on November 8, 2024.
