Hulu's Adaptation of Stephen King's THE EYES OF THE DRAGON is Dead
Noooooo! I have been waiting to see an adaptation of Stephen King’s classic 1984 fantasy novel The Eyes of The Dragon for years! I love this story and last year it was announced that Hulu was developing a series with writer and producer Seth Grahame-Smith, who produced the two It films. He was set as showrunner and this could have been a seriously epic series! But, unfortunately, it’s no longer happening.
Before we get into the details of the death of the project, The Eyes of the Dragon is set in the fictional realm of Delain and it tells the story of power and the path of two prince brothers. Here are the story details:
King Roland’s manipulative magician, Flagg, sees his power threatened when Queen Sasha gives birth to Peter, an heir to the throne. When the queen is pregnant with a second son, Flagg gets her midwife to mortally wound the queen and so begins his plot to dispose of the future king. Peter brings wine to his father’s bed chambers each night and Flagg poisons the potion and frames the son. The magician has meanwhile also been manipulating the younger son, Thomas, showing him secret passages where the boy can spy on his father. Thomas sees the murder of the king and the frameup of his brother, but is torn when Peter is found guilty and locked in an enormous tower. After all with Peter gone, he’s king at age 12. He allows Flagg widespread power that corrupts the kingdom. Meanwhile, Peter must attempt an escape to thwart Flagg and win back the throne.
The story has direct connections to The Dark Tower series andThe Stand. The character Flagg from the story is the same Flagg that shows up in the other stories. Grahame-Smith wanted Sam Rockwell to play Flagg in the show!
Anyway, Seth Grahame-Smith recently appeared on an episode of The Kingcast, and it’s there he revealed that The Eyes of the Dragon TV series is officially dead at Hulu. Apparently the reason behind the show not moving forward was due to the big-budget as well as some behind-the-scenes changes of Hulu executives.
The original plans were for the first season to adapt the whole book and then the seasons after would continue the untold story of what happened after.
I’m pretty bummed out that The Eyes of the Dragon series is dead. Hopefully, one day something will actually be able to make it happen.
