HUMAN DISCOVERIES is Fun, But May Rub Some People the Wrong Way

Human Discoveries is a new show on Facebook Watch starring Zac Efron and Anna Kendrick. It focuses on what it must’ve been like for the first humans when they were discovering different things such as fire. I’ve been able to check out the first few episodes and it’s been a lot of fun. This is one animated series that I would not recommend for children though. There’s a lot of language, blood, and sexual content.

Efron voices Gary who is a man who isn’t very strong or even that great at his job as a hunter. Kendrick plays Jane, a woman who is not happy in her role as a gatherer. The two of them want to improve the life of their tribe and their society. Many of their friends and rivals laugh at them for wanting to change things but can see advantages to some of their ideas like when Gary stumbles across fire. This show does get political and tackle things like gender roles and gun control, but they do so in a usually humorous way.

Of course, the secondary characters add a lot of fun to the show like Marsh. Marsh is the oldest man in the village and he often tries to keep traditions alive. Then, you have Ugg who is the jockey, meathead type. He doesn’t want any change since it would ultimately mean that he loses his role as the alpha male and leader of the group. The best part of the show in my opinion though is the Elk. These are Elk who live near the humans and often debate their role in relation to the humans. They are hilarious.

The animation style of Human Discoveries reminds me of shows like Mother Up! and while it’s not my favorite, it works very well for this series. I will also say that if I hadn’t known ahead of time, I would not have been able to tell you that Efron and Kendrick starred in it. I probably would’ve recognized Kendrick’s voice as being familiar and then look it up, but I did not recognize Efron’s.

All in all, Human Discoveries is a lot of fun, but not for everyone. You can start watching on Facebook Watch today.
