Hunter Schafer's BLADE RUNNER 2099 Character Brings One of the Franchise's More Interesting Twists
While Michelle Yeoh's replicant Blade Runner, Olwen, is at the center of one of Blade Runner 2099's biggest mysteries, she's not facing it alone. Standing beside her is Hunter Schafer's Cora, a character whose story turns one of the franchise's familiar ideas completely upside down.
Throughout the Blade Runner series, audiences have watched replicants try to blend into human society. Cora flips that concept on its head.
According to showrunner Silka Luisa, Cora is actually a human who has spent her entire life trying to stay one step ahead of Blade Runners.
She explained: “Hunter is playing a human who is a fugitive and has spent her life running from Blade Runners. And now has to pretend to be one.”
That's already a compelling setup, but Luisa says Cora's greatest struggle isn't simply surviving. It's what years of survival have done to her as a person.
She continued: “In this struggle to survive and just trying to live day-to-day, she’s actually lost her humanity.”
That's an interesting direction for Blade Runner to explore. For decades, the franchise has questioned whether replicants can become more human.
Cora presents the opposite dilemma. She's fully human, yet the life she's been forced to live has stripped away the very qualities that define her.
Luisa summed up the emotional heart of Cora's journey with a question that could end up driving much of the series. “So she’s a human who has lost her humanity. And the question for the series is: Once you’ve lost her humanity, can you regain it?”
That's classic Blade Runner. The franchise has never been interested in simple answers, and Cora's story looks like another opportunity to blur the lines between biology and identity.
Her partnership with Olwen makes that dynamic even more interesting. On paper, they couldn't be more different. One is a replicant Blade Runner approaching the end of her predetermined lifespan. The other is a human who's spent years hiding from Blade Runners before being forced to become one herself.
Together, they'll investigate a case involving missing rogue replicants, but it sounds like the real mystery may be the personal journeys both women are taking. As Olwen wrestles with mortality, Cora is searching for something that's much harder to define.
The series appears to pair two characters who are each questioning what they really are, despite coming from completely opposite sides of the human and replicant divide.
It's a fresh direction for the franchise and one that feels perfectly at home in the Blade Runner universe. Instead of repeating familiar stories, Blade Runner 2099 looks ready to explore identity from new angles.
