Exclusive Interview with The Cast of THE GOD OF HIGH SCHOOL

The God of High School has proved to not only be a popular comic on WEBTOON, but a popular anime on Crunchyroll. I watched the first episode of the Crunchyroll Original and it was pretty awesome. When I have time, I’d love to get caught up. I was also given the opportunity to ask a few questions of the main Japanese voice cast via email. This included Tatsumaru Tachibana who voices Jin Mori, Kentaro Kumagai who voices Han Daewi, and Ayaka Ohashi who voices Yoo Mira. Due to the need for translators, I was asked to keep questions brief, but their responses have been delightful to read. What’s your favorite part of The God of High School?

Tommy: Had you read The God of High School before auditioning for the role? If not, have you gone back and read it since being cast?

Tatsumaru: The webcomic was included in the audition brief, and that's when I first read it.

Kentaro: I started reading the comic after I decided to audition for it. I quickly fell in love with this work.

Ayaka: I read [the webcomic] after I got this role. It’s vertical scrolling style made it easy to read, and I was surprised [the webcomic] is in full color!

Note from Crunchyroll: She is comparing WEBTOON with the traditional Japanese manga, which goes horizontal.

Tommy: What's your favorite part of voicing Jin Mori?

Tatsumaru: I was excited to feel the beginning of the story when he rode his bike through the guardrail and shouted "Okay! Here we go!” in episode 1.

Tommy: What's your favorite part of voicing Han Daewi?

Kentaro: What I like most about him is the willingness to sacrifice himself for someone else.

Tommy: What's your favorite part of voicing Yoo Mira?

Ayaka: There was a part in the script where I ad-libbed a rant, but I came up with it right away!! (laugh)

Tommy: I understand that before The God of High School you were more prominent in the theatre and stage industry. What has it been like going from those areas of acting to voice acting for an anime?

Tatsumaru: I have wanted to be a voice actor since I was a kid. I started doing voice acting when I joined my current agency.

Tommy: Is it easy to get in the headspace for Jin Mori or has it stretched you as an actor?

Tatsumaru: The other casts and the staff members helped me get into the role faster than I thought I would. I learned a lot and felt a lot through this title. It's a treasure in my life to have met [“The God of High School”].

Tommy: Are you a fan of anime yourself, or do you see it simply as a job?

Kentaro: Of course, I'm a fan of the anime, and I also work hard as a voice actor to make the character come more alive.

Tommy: You voiced Aston Altland in Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans. Have you ever made Gunpla? If so, what's been your favorite?

Kentaro: Yes, I have made Gunpla models. The one I like best is the Man Rodi, because Aston was on board.

Tommy: Is there an American show or character that you would want to do a voice over for in Japanese?

Ayaka: I'd like to dub a drama. And maybe a horror movie!! (laugh)
