If PACIFIC RIM UPRISING is a Success We Will See a PACIFIC RIM Expanded Universe

If you liked what you saw in the trailer for Pacific Rim Uprising that was released last week, there's a good chance that you'll get to see a lot more of that world in the future. According to director Steven S. DeKnight, if this next film does well at the box office, we will see a third Pacific Rim movie that will launch a possible extended universe that will involve giant robots and monsters battling it out.

While talking to Nerdist about the film, he was asked about expanding the franchise and possibly building a Pacific Rim universe much like Star Wars and Star Trek, he said:

“I’m certainly hoping so. I think you’ll definitely probably get more comics. The plan was always to use this movie as a launching pad. If enough people show up to this, we’ve already talked about the plot of the third movie, and how the end of the third movie would expand the universe to a Star Wars/Star Trek-style [franchise] where you can go in many, many different directions. You can go main canon, you can go spin-offs, you can go one-offs. Yeah, that’s the plan. And I would love to see an animated TV show based on this.”

If this next Pacific Rim movie turns out to be a good flick, I wouldn't mind seeing the franchise expanding. It's a really cool world that is filled with fun characters and, of course, then there's the Jaegers and Kaijus that will constantly be battling it out.

The continuation of the franchise all rests in the box office numbers, though. The first movie did ok, but it barely made enough to warrant this sequel. To keep the franchise alive after Uprising, the film is going to have to do a hell of a lot better than the first film.

Are you excited to see Pacific Uprising and would you want to see the franchise expand into a cinematic universe?

Pacific Rim Uprising arrives in theaters on February 23, 2018.
