Iko Uwais Returns to His Silat Roots in New Indonesian Action Thriller WARRIOR
Iko Uwais is stepping back into the arena that made him a global action icon. The star who broke out with The Raid franchise is heading home for Warrior, a new Indonesian action thriller that taps directly into the Silat-fueled intensity that launched his career.
Uwais built his reputation on raw, close-quarters combat and grounded martial arts choreography. With Warrior, he’s returning to that foundation in a story that promises street-level grit and escalating chaos across Jakarta.
The film centers on a former elite Silat fighter who’s just walked out of prison. He wants a clean break from the violence that defined his past.
That plan falls apart fast when a Malaysian crime syndicate rolls into his neighborhood, tightening its grip on local streets and threatening the people he cares about. Forced back into the fight, he becomes the only thing standing between the syndicate and total control.
What starts as intimidation turns into something much bigger. The action is set to spill through Jakarta’s markets, alleyways, and rooftops as the conflict builds into open warfare.
If Uwais’ previous work is any indication, expect tight choreography, bone-crunching impact, and zero shortcuts when it comes to practical stunt work.
The film also marks a major career move for John Radel ACS, who makes his solo directing debut on Warrior. Radel has worked as a cinematographer and producer on major productions across Asia and Hollywood, including Monkey Man, directed by Dev Patel, and Blackhat from Michael Mann.
He’s also collaborated with Uwais on four previous films, with Radel serving as both DP and producer. They’re also teaming up on the upcoming action feature Warpath, which pairs Uwais with Scott Adkins.
The project brings together Indonesian industry veteran Delon Tio of Nation Pictures, the banner behind key titles like the Mo Brothers’ debut Macabre. Joining him are Erika North and Nick North of Yeti Entertainment, a company known for international film development and finance across Asia and the U.S. Action producer Mike Leeder is also onboard through Red Packet Media.
Uwais is also serving as an executive producer alongside Ryan Santoso through his newly launched Uwais Pictures label. International sales are being handled by K-Movie Entertainment.
Warrior is the first project to come out of a new joint venture between Asia Media Alliance Group and Nation Pictures. The partnership is focused on building genre films across Southeast Asia for global audiences, with more action and horror titles expected to be announced soon.
Production kicks off this summer, with the entire shoot set in Indonesia. The film will lean heavily on local locations, crews, and rising martial arts talent, reinforcing its commitment to authenticity.
For fans of hard-hitting Indonesian action cinema and Silat-driven fight choreography, Warrior sounds like exactly the kind of project that put Uwais on the map in the first place.
