Image Comics Announces SUPERMASSIVE Crossover Comic for RADIANT BLACK, INFERNO GIRL RED, and New Series ROGUE SON

Update: Added 3 preview pages for Rogue Son.

I’ve loved reading Radiant Black from Kyle Higgins and Marcelo Costa. It’s one of my favorite ongoing series at the moment. Well, there’s a lot more coming for fans to get excited for.

Image Comics recently revealed a one-shot comic releasing on February 2, 2022, called Supermassive that will be a crossover event for Radiant Black, Inferno Girl Red, and Rogue Son. Inferno Girl Red is an upcoming series from Mat Groom and Erica D’Urso that was funded via Kickstarter earlier this year and is set to release in June 2022.

Supermassive will serve as Inferno Girl Red’s first release with Image and while it does release before the main series, Groom has informed fans that it won’t spoil anything. Rogue Son is a brand new series announced that will be written by Ryan Parrott, illustrated by Abel, and colored by Chris O’Halloran.

All of these are tokusatsu-based comics, and I’m very excited.

Supermassive itself will be written by Groom, Higgins, and Parrott and illustrated by Francesco Manna with colors by Igor Monti, letters by Becca Carey, and edits by Michael Busuttil. Also, all the co-creators will consult on the project. I cannot freaking wait for this! All of these creators are talented and I’m very intrigued to see what Parrott does with his own tokusatsu character after working so long on Power Rangers. Here’s a line from the solicitation:

Breakout hit character RADIANT BLACK faces a threat from beyond the walls of our world -- but he won’t have to face it alone, thanks to the debuts of Image Comics' newest heroes, INFERNO GIRL RED and ROGUE SUN. The invading force threatens to tear all of reality apart -- and even if it can be stopped, it will change these unlikely allies forever.

Talking about the upcoming event, Groom said:

There’s a tremendous freedom that comes with doing creator-owned comics. But that freedom comes with a responsibility—to experiment, to swing for the fences... and maybe even to encourage people to rethink where the fence should be. I think anybody who has been reading Radiant Black can attest to the fact that Kyle and Marcelo have been living up to this responsibility–and I see Supermassive as not only continuing this, but escalating it dramatically. There’s a reason we gave it that name!

Higgins added:

The best part of making comic books is the collaboration. My favorite part is when that collaboration is with your friends. From Power Rangers to Ultraman, Mat, Ryan and I have done quite a bit of world building together. All of which feels a bit like a warmup act for what we’re building now. To echo Mat’s sentiment—there’s a reason we’re calling this Supermassive.

Parrott said:

To me, the beauty of the original Image shared superhero universe was that it was modern, accessible and free from the weight of massive corporate oversight. It felt like it was just a bunch of friends telling stories together and we wanted Supermassive to encapsulate that same spirit.

Here’s a brief description of Rogue Son:

[Rogue Son] will follow a young teenager named Dylan Siegel, who finds out that not only has his his father been murdered, but that he was also secretly the superhero Rogue Sun. Now tasked with solving the mystery of his father’s death and with inheriting the Rogue Sun mantle, Dylan has to save the world and process his tumultuous past relationship with is father.

Sharing his excitement for Rogue Son to appear, Abel shared:

It feels to me like Rogue Sun was never created; he just burst out in front of us. Being part of this is a thrilling flight in so many ways!

I cannot wait for Supermassive, Inferno Girl Red, and Rogue Son to all release! These are sure to be incredible comics. Which part of this announcement has you the most excited?
