Teaser Trailer From Season 2 of HBO's Comedy Series SOMEBODY SOMEWHERE

Somebody Somewhere debuted on HBO last year, and in its seven short episodes, it captured audiences’ hearts. It made my list of top shows of 2022, and was even my favorite of the bunch. The series, created by Hannah Bos and Paul Thureen, stars comedian Bridget Everett as Sam, a middle-aged woman who returns to her family home in Kansas after the death of her sister and the impending rehabilitation of her mother. She is joined by Jeff Hiller, who plays her best friend Joel, Mary Catherine Garrison as Sam’s picture-perfect sister Tricia, Mike Hagerty as Sam’s father and stoic Kansas farmer Ed, Jane Brody as her mother Mary Jo, and Murray Hill as newfound friend Fred Rococo, a university soil scientist/master of ceremonies.

The first season was a story of hope, humor, and love, and while the next is sure to deliver the same, it did have a huge curveball in its path. In May 2022, not long before production was slated to begin, Mike Hagerty, who played Sam’s affable father, died from an adverse reaction to antibiotics. An improv veteran also known for Friends and The George Carlin Show, Hagerty initially had a big presence in season two.

But Sam lost a beloved relative at the start of Somebody Somewhere, and subjecting her to another death didn’t feel right to Bos and Thureen. Instead, they decided to keep Sam’s dad alive off-screen, sending him to visit his brother while Sam’s mom grudgingly enters a rehab facility to address her drinking problem.

Everett says of Hagerty’s death:

“That was a real punch to the gut for all of us. He brought so much heart to the show, so [we were] having to figure out all that stuff at the last minute while grieving his loss. We decided to honor him throughout the show, just in small ways. We changed some things. There’s a lot more of Tricia, the sister, who I think is so incredible in this season.”

Some of the themes that will be explored in the new season include a parent’s decline, a gay hopeless romantic exploring love, a divorcée piecing her life back together, an ostensible loner finding community, and two best friends suffering explosive diarrhea after eating strange finger foods at a recital. What more could you ask for, really?
