IMAX Trailer Unleashed For SCARLET, Mamoru Hosoda’s Epic Anime Fantasy

Sony Pictures has dropped a brand-new IMAX trailer for Scarlet, the latest anime feature from acclaimed filmmaker Mamoru Hosoda. If you missed this one during its initial U.S. theatrical run in December, Sony is lining up another shot to experience it.

The film returns to theaters in IMAX this February, and the new trailer leans hard into the scale, emotion, and wild imagination Hosoda fans expect.

Hosoda, best known for films like The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Summer Wars, Wolf Children, The Boy and the Beast, Mirai, and Belle, delivers something a little darker and more intense here.

Scarlet first premiered at the 2025 Venice Film Festival and quickly stood out as one of his most ambitious projects to date. It blends fantasy, myth, and time-hopping drama.

The film follows Scarlet, a fearless princess voiced by Mana Ashida, who fails to avenge her father’s murder and awakens in a surreal realm known as the Land of the Dead. In this strange and chaotic world, unfinished vengeance comes with a terrifying cost.

If Scarlet doesn’t defeat her enemy and reach a destination called The Endless Place, she’ll fade into Emptiness and cease to exist. Her journey throws her across time and space, eventually colliding with Hijiri, a modern-day Japanese man voiced by Masaki Okada.

Their meeting adds a sharp twist to what is essentially Hosoda’s own genre-bending take on Hamlet, filtered through isekai-style fantasy and emotional character drama.

Also known in Japan as Endless Scarlet or Scarlet Without Limits, the film is written and directed by Hosoda and produced by Yûichirô Saitô, Nozomu Takahashi, and Toshimi Tanio. The project comes from Studio Chizu alongside Nippon TV, with Sony Pictures handling distribution.

Sony will re-release Scarlet in IMAX theaters starting February 6th, 2026.
