INDEPENDENCE DAY 3 Described as "An Intergalactic Journey," Roland Emmerich Teases Plot Details

I like the first Independence Day as much as the next kid who was twelve when they saw it for the first time, but I heard such awful things about Independence Day: Resurgence that I didn't bother seeing it. (The studio also held its press screenings at 11am the morning after the movie came out, which is a tacit admission they think the film is terrible and are trying to contain negative word of mouth as much as possible.) But despite only making $41 million in the U.S. this past weekend, the movie pulled in over $140 million total worldwide; with a budget of $165 million, there's a chance it could earn enough by the end of its box office run to justify another sequel.

If that ends up happening, director Roland Emmerich is coming back on board. In an interview with Empire, he teased what the plot of Independence Day 3 would be and explained how he would be involved (spoilers for Resurgence ahead):

"The next one will be an intergalactic journey. It'll be [set] maybe a year or two later, not 20 years [on]. I want to maintain this group of people, especially the young characters, and Jeff [Goldblum] and Brent [Spiner] will take part in it. It'll be fun to keep that group together...Will I definitely direct it? Oh yes. I'd never, ever let someone else do it."

Later in the Empire interview, Emmerich elaborated about some of the third film's story elements:

One of Resurgence’s plot threads sees a benevolent alien race pop up in our orbit with news of a giant space civil war. This conflict, a kind of extra-terrestrial version of Anchorman’s news team fight, has aliens teaming up against the space bastards currently threatening Earth. In a possible third part, humanity will be joining that fight. "I imagine them now going in one of these ships they've rebuilt into a wormhole,” explains Emmerich, adding: "I think it'll be the classic of going into space but it has to be about Earth, and we have a really good idea for that."
