INFINITY WAR Directors Discuss The Shocking Moments Involving Spider-Man and Black Panther

Like most of the Avengers: Infinity War posts that we are covering these days, if you haven't seen the movie yet...

After Thanos snapped his fingers at the end of Avengers: Infinity War, we saw a lot of characters die that we didn't expect to see die! Two of those characters were Spider-Man and Black Panther. With the sequels coming, we didn't expect that at all. But it happened, and there's obviously a grand plan for what will happen in the future. But for now, those character really are dead.

Each of the characters died in the arms of the people they deeply cared for. They were incredibly sad moments and after five times of seeing the film, I still can't get through that Spider-man death without shedding a tear.

During a recent interview with Uproxx, the Russo Bros. opened up about the process of killing off these characters and when asked if they were aware that killing Spider-Man would make people cry, Joe Russo replied with:

"Well, you know, I cried during The Empire Strikes Back. I think there’s a power in narrative and The Empire Strikes Back was one of the more impactful movies when I was in a child. I think I was ten. I didn’t cry but I remember being horrified, but I was five."

Anthony Russo went on to elaborate on bringing that harrowing scene to life and how Robert Downey Jr. helped Tom Holland deliver his incredible performance:

"[The] moment really expanded with Robert Downey Jr. Ever since we introduced the new Spider-Man in Civil War, Robert has been a very active mentor to him. And not just outside, but in the moment and in the scene while acting. Robert is one of the most remarkable performers on the planet and he makes everyone around him better and he brings everybody up. So, when Robert is tuned in to what you’re doing and, on a performance level, he wants to help feed you and pull you. He can do remarkable things. And he will dance with Tom on a performance level that is amazing and that was one example of it. He’s a very giving performer and he really helped us find that moment with Tom."

When talking about the demise of Black Panther, Anthony amusingly teased that there's always a way to establish a new Black Panther. While laughing, he said:

"Hey, you know, it’s part of the storytelling from Black Panther. There are ways to establish a new Black Panther. Do you want to see a fight between Okoye and Shuri?"

We all know that's probably not how things will play out, but he went on to talk about what he loved about that moment of Black Panther's death:

"What I love about that moment, Okoye, just the mission of that character to be the King’s protector and she takes that job very seriously. And for him to evaporate in her arms…and the way she reacted to that was riveting and we couldn’t cut away from it."

What are your thoughts on how the deaths of these characters were handled in the film? There are so many different ways that things can go down in Avengers 4 to undo what was done in Infinity War and I can't wait to see the road that the Russo Bros. are taking with it.
