Intense Trailer for the Fantastic Film THE STANFORD PRISON EXPERIMENT

In the summer of 1971, Dr. Philip Zimbardo conducted a fascinating experiment at Stanford University, in which he brought in 24 volunteer male students who took on the roles of either prison guard or prisoner in a simulated “prison” set up in the halls of the university. The experiment was shut down after only six days because things got insanely out of hand. This is based on a true story, and it’s the basis for the movie called The Stanford Prison Experiment.

I had the opportunity to watch this film at Sundance earlier this year, and it was intense as hell. This is a great movie, and it was one of the best that I saw at the film festival. You can read my review of it here. It has a great cast that includes Billy Crudup, Ezra Miller, Olivia Thirlby, Tye Sheridan, Billy Crudup, Keir Gilchrist, Michael Angarano, Jesse Carere, and Thomas Mann. Here’s the synopsis:

What happens when a college psych study goes shockingly wrong? In this tense, psychological thriller based on the notorious true story, Billy Crudup stars as Stanford University professor Dr. Philip Zimbardo, who, in 1971, cast 24 student volunteers as prisoners and guards in a simulated jail to examine the source of abusive behavior in the prison system. The results astonished the world, as participants went from middle-class undergrads to drunk-with-power sadists and submissive victims in just a few days. Winner of two awards at the Sundance Film Festival, including Best Screenplay, and created with the close participation of Dr. Zimbardo himself, ‘The Stanford Prison Experiment’ is a chilling, edge-of-your-seat thriller about the dark side of power and the effects of imprisonment. Featuring an extraordinary cast of rising young actors, including Ezra Miller, Olivia Thirlby, Tye Sheridan, Keir Gilchrist, Michael Angarano, and Thomas Mann.

The movie is similar to the 2010 film, The Experiment, but this one was a hell of a lot better. The Stanford Prison Experiment opens on July 17th and hits VOD on July 24th
