INVINCIBLE Star Chris Diamantopoulos Wants to Play the MCU's Green Goblin and Pitches a Cool GOBLIN TV Series
Spider-Man's long-time nemesis, the Green Goblin, is one of the most iconic villains in comic book history, and he’s been awesomely played Willem Dafoe in a few Spider-Man films.
But Dafoe won’t be able to play the character forever and Invincible star Chris Diamantopoulos has his sights set on playing Norman Osborn in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He also has an interesting pitch for a Goblin TV series.
In a recent interview with The Direct, Diamantopoulos shared his love for comics and his ambitious idea for exploring Osborn’s descent into villainy.
He sahred: "I was born going to Silver Snail comic shop. That’s like one of the first places I ever went when I was a little kid, little baby. I’ve been a comic fan, a Marvel fan for my entire life, passed that on to my son.
“But I think that they should make a series called Goblin, and it should be about Norman Osborn leading up to becoming the Green Goblin. And I should be Norman Osborn."
Diamantopoulos is known for his roles in Silicon Valley and Hannibal, and he certainly has the acting chops to tackle the duality of Osborn’s character.
While stepping into the shoes of Dafoe’s iconic portrayal is a tall order, but Diamantopoulos might be able to pull off something unique and cool with enthusiasm for the role and talent.
The Green Goblin’s future in the MCU is wide open. Marvel Studios has yet to introduce an Earth-616 version of Norman Osborn, leaving the door open for a fresh take on the character.
Dafoe himself hasn’t ruled out another return. While promoting Nosferatu, he said: "We’ll see. I could come back. Tom [Holland] was great to work with, and the whole series of Spider-Man films I did were great fun."
Dafoe previously shared his openness to reprising the role, saying, "If everything was right, sure. I mean, that’s a great role. I liked the fact that it’s a double role both times… very different experiences, but I had a good time on both."
Regardless, Diamantopoulos’s pitch for a Goblin TV series offers an interesting alternative. Exploring Norman Osborn’s rise to power in a serialized format could dive deeper into his psyche and the factors that drive him to become the Green Goblin.
