IP MAN 4 Is Kicking THE RISE OF SKYWALKER's Butt at the Chinese Box Office
It looks like Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker isn’t as big of a hit in China as Disney thought it would be. In fact, it will be the least successful installment of the franchise by far in the country, which is the world’s largest market.
The Rise of Skywalker was ranked seventh at the Chinese box office behind a bunch of local Chinese action films and dramas. After its weak opening debut, the second weekend it only made just $2 million and accounted for less than 3% of China’s total screenings. Ouch!
In total, the film has only made $19.7 million so far. To put that in perspective for you, The Force Awakens made $126 million, Rogue One made $69.4 million, and The Last Jedi made $42.6 million.
Instead, audiences flocked to see the Donnie Yen martial arts film Ip Man 4: The Finale which led the China box office with a $24.2 million, bringing its cumulative take to $97.6 million. So, that film is clearing kicking The Rise of Skywalker’s butt!
I guess China isn’t a big fan of Star Wars these days.
