Is LETHAL WEAPON 5 Coming? Maybe, Says Exec Producer of TV Reboot

All the way back in 1987, Shane Black wrote and directed the first installment in the Lethal Weapon series. Who knew, fast forwarding to present day, that we'd be discussing a television reboot and a potential fifth installment? Certainly, Black created some great characters that have had great moments over the years, but is there enough interest in Riggs and Murtaugh's continuing adventures on the silver screen? Time will tell, but while promoting the Lethal Weapon TV series at the Television Critics Association's summer press tour, Executive Producer Dan Lin shed a thin beam of light on the potential for Lethal Weapon 5, saying in an interview:

"There's still potential for Lethal Weapon 5, because of [showrunner] Matt [Miller]'s take on the show, they let us extend the series, but there may be Lethal Weapon 5 in the future — but for now, the focus is 100 percent on the TV series."

There's no other information on whether Danny Glover or Mel Gibson would reprise their roles as Murtaugh and Riggs respectively, or if the new film would follow the adventures of the rebooted duo.

It looks like this might just be another stab at the nostalgia well. Everything from the '80s and '90s seems to be coming back nowadays, and while another Lethal Weapon film would be interesting, and probably fun, you have to wonder if anyone is really interested enough to see it. Richard Donner directed all four of the previous films, but he's 86 now and hasn't done anything for a long time. Black is still making quality films — The Nice Guys and Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang, are very solid detective comedies — and maybe if Warner Bros. could get him back to pen a script and possibly direct, we could be in for a potentially great return to the franchise. Otherwise, I'm not so sure.
