It Looks Like THE KNICK Might Actually Get a Third Season According to Steven Soderbergh

Steven Soderbergh‘s The Knick showtime series was an amazing series. There were only two seasons on Cinemax before it ended, and Soderbergh directed every one of the 20 episodes. The creative team, which also included Jack Amiel and Michael Begler, managed to wrap the story up, but the fans wanted more.

Now, four years after the series ended, Soderbergh is saying that there’s a third season in development thanks to writer, director, and producer Barry Jenkins (Moonlight, If Beale Street Could Talk) and Knick star André Holland. Here’s the synopsis for the original series:

As upscale care in New York shifts from urban locales in the early 1900s, Knickerbocker Hospital remains in the city to serve a mostly poor, immigrant population. Undeterred by high mortality from sepsis in a pre-antibiotics era, chief surgeon John Thackery pushes medicine's boundaries, pioneering procedures despite his painful past and severe cocaine addiction. Dr. Algernon Edwards, recruited by hospital patron Capt. August Robertson, is the chief's professional equal, but Edwards' color skews Thackery's opinion -- until a chance discovery changes it. The Knick is a sometimes-graphic drama, revealing racism and corruption while desperate people became operating-room guinea pigs.

The Playlist explained that a couple of years ago, Jenkins and Holland were “discussing to the idea of reviving the series for a third, or brand new season now starring Holland’s Dr. Algernon C. Edwards character.” Clive Owen’s character died at the end of Season 2, so don’t expect him back.

Soderbergh confirmed this news, saying:

“Yeah. [André] and Barry took that on. I told them, ’Look, I had, I had my shot. Godspeed, take it in whatever direction you want.’”

He went on to suggest the he would only stay on in an executive producer role if the series came back. Soderbergh also confirmed that original creators were back on board and had already written a pilot episode.

“[André and Barry] came up with a really great approach with Jack and Michael. And that seems to be advancing rapidly. I just read the pilot, which is terrific.”

When asked if Jenkins would direct the new Knick series, Soderbergh said, “I’m very passive on that. That’s all Barry’s baby.” It’s safe to say, though, that Jenkins will at least direct some of the episodes. But, we’ll see if this actually ends up moving forward. I hope it does, I would love to see the story continue in a new season!
