It Seems That Universal's Dark Universe Monster Movie Franchise Isn't Dead Yet
Remember that time when Universal Pictures was building the hype for their epic Dark Universe monster movie franchise? Then Tom Cruise's The Mummy was released, and they just stopped talking about it and the whole thing just kind of faded away like it never happened and a bunch of producers dropped out. The second film in the franchise was supposed to be The Bride of Frankenstein, but it seemed like they pulled the plug on that.
We just assumed the Dark Universe thing had been abandoned, but it doesn't sound like that's the case. There was a recent Instagram post from artist Robert Vargas, that was discovered by Universal Monsters Universe, and it suggests that Universal Pictures hasn't given up on it yet.
Apparently, Vargas had a meeting last week with the Dark Universe team at Universal Pictures, and he says that he's "looking forward to contributing to the Universal Pictures legacy with my work." Then added, "Monster things in the works."
We don't know what exactly he's working on, but it definitely has something to do with the Dark Universe. If Universal Pictures is looking to move forward with the Dark Universe and try again, they probably need to start from scratch and pretend like The Mummy never happened.
I've always thought that bringing back the Universal Monster universe would be awesome. I love those characters, but they really have to be creative with them and actually make good films for it to work. This whole modern day direction they are going with it isn't going to cut it. A modern-day setting for these characters is just so boring and uninteresting.
What would you like to see from these Dark Universe films?
