It Sounds Like AVENGERS 4 Won't Be the Last AVENGERS Movie and Marvel is Planning To Launch a New Big Event Franchise
Yes, Avengers 4 will bring an end to the current road that the MCU has been on since they first launched with Iron Man. But that doesn't mean it will be the last Avengers movie! Disney CEO Bob Iger recently teased the future plans of Marvel, and while he doesn't reveal what future films they are currently working on, he does reveal that there are more Avengers films coming and that they are going to launch a new big event franchise beyond the Avengers.
"We meet on a regular basis with our Marvel team, and we've plotted out Marvel movies that will take us well into the next decade."
So it sounds like they might actually have the next three phases of films tentatively planned out. The future will also include a new franchise within the MCU.
"I'm guessing we will try our hand at what I'll call a new franchise beyond Avengers, but that doesn't necessarily mean you won't see more Avengers down the road. We just haven't made any announcements about that."
Since the Disney and Fox deal hasn't closed yet, I don't suspect that X-Men or Fantastic Four is a part of Marvel's future yet. We've previously been told that the future of Marvel would be heavily set in the cosmic realm of the universe and if that's the case, maybe The Eternals could be that new franchise. Kevin Feige did say it's one of several properties that the studio is developing. Iger goes on to talk about the future of the Avengers, saying:
"Given the popularity of the characters and given the popularity of the franchise, I don't think people should conclude there will never be another Avengers movie."
At the moment, all we really know about Marvel's next phase of films is that it will kick off with the Untitled Spider-Man Sequel, which will be released on July 5, 2019. Then there are a bunch of Untitled Marvel Movies set to be released on May 1, 2020; July 31, 2020; November 6, 2020; May 7, 2021; July 30, 2021; November 5, 2021; February 18, 2022; May 6, 2022; and July 29, 2022. Those movies might include Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Black Widow, and Black Panther.
What do you think Marvel's next big movie event franchise will be?
