IT: WELCOME TO DERRY Creator Teases a “Greater” Season 2 After Major Awards Win

Fans waiting to return to the haunted streets of Derry might have something big to look forward to. It: Welcome to Derry has already made a strong impression with its first season, and now the creative team is teasing that the next chapter could raise the bar even higher.

The HBO horror series recently scored a major win at the Saturn Awards, taking home Best Horror Television Series and beating out heavy hitters like The Last of Us and another adaptation of Stephen King’s work, The Institute.

During the event, series co-creator and executive producer Andy Muschietti shared a quick but promising update about what could be coming next for the terrifying world tied to Pennywise.

Speaking with reporters at the press conference, Muschietti acknowledged that expectations have grown after the success of the first season.

“We’re very proud that the expectations are high after the first season,” he said. “I think we’re going to deliver something that is greater.”

That’s an exciting tease considering HBO still hasn’t officially confirmed a second season yet. Even so, the delay doesn’t appear to have anything to do with the show’s performance.

Earlier this year, HBO CEO Casey Bloys addressed the situation and shut down any rumors that the series might be struggling. According to Bloys, the first season performed extremely well for the network, making a follow-up season an easy call from a business perspective.

He also confirmed that Andy Muschietti and his sister and producing partner Barbara Muschietti are already developing story ideas for the next chapter, noting that the project is “not in limbo.”

The creative team has actually been thinking about the long game for a while. Showrunners Jason Fuchs and Brad Caleb Kane have previously talked about a larger plan that could span three seasons.

Each installment would dig into different cycles of Pennywise’s horrifying influence on the town of Derry, expanding the mythology introduced in King’s original story and the It films.

The debut season took us to 1962, slotting in just before the timeline of Muschietti’s two It films, which are set in 1989 and 2016. With Pennywise’s killing cycle tied to a 27-year rhythm, it all adds up.

Season 2, as Muschietti teased back in January 2025, would go further back to 1935, with a third season potentially exploring 1908. These dates are already baked into the show’s existing mythology.

The first season dipped into both eras via flashbacks, especially focusing on the eerie legacy of Bob Gray, the man behind the clown before something far darker took over. The story also explored how his daughter Ingrid was left shattered in 1908 and spiraled into darkness across the decades in search of her lost father.

Even though we’ve seen Ingrid’s descent, there’s still a lot of interesting eerie ground to cover. Think about those 1930s gangsters who made a brief appearance, or the 1906 Kitchener Ironworks explosion, referenced in both King’s novel and the show’s opening credits but never actually shown. Both eras are ripe for great new stories.

With strong audience support and critical recognition now backing the show, It: Welcome to Derry seems positioned to grow into something even bigger if Season 2 gets the official green light.

And if Muschietti’s tease is any indication, the next round of terror in Derry might be darker, stranger, and far more intense than what we’ve seen so far.
