IT: WELCOME TO DERRY Season 2 Showrunner Promises It Will Be More "Terrifying"
It sounds like Pennywise’s next round of nightmares could be even more disturbing. HBO’s hit horror series It: Welcome to Derry is gearing up for Season 2, and showrunner Brad Caleb Kane has shared an exciting production update along with a tease of what fans can expect when the killer clown returns.
While speaking with the New York Post about his upcoming Friday the 13th prequel series, Crystal Lake, Kane revealed that work on the second season of It: Welcome to Derry is already underway.
“We’re actively writing (Season 2) right now,” Kane revealed. “We’re starting to shoot in the summer of next year.”
That puts filming on track for summer 2027, which means we could see It: Welcome to Derry Season 2 premiere in late 2027 or sometime in 2028. HBO hasn't announced an official release date, but at least we have a better idea of when Pennywise might come crawling back.
The next season will also take viewers much further into Derry's disturbing past. Rather than picking up where Season 1 left off, the story will jump back another 27 years, taking place during the Great Depression.
“We’re in Depression-era America. It’s a very different set of circumstances. New kids, new characters, maybe some old characters, and the same old Pennywise,” Kane explained.
That time period should make for an interesting new chapter in Derry's history, especially with Pennywise preying on a town already dealing with the hardships of Depression-era America.
As for the horror, Kane isn't planning to give audiences a break. He promises Season 2 will be “as terrifying” as Season 1, “if not more.”
That's an exciting promise considering how disturbing the first season got. With a new group of kids facing Pennywise and a completely different period to explore, there's plenty of room for the creative team to come up with some seriously messed-up scares.
Kane, who previously shared showrunning duties with Jason Fuchs during the first season, will now serve as the sole showrunner. The series serves as a prequel to It and It Chapter Two, the films based on Stephen King's classic 1986 horror novel. Bill Skarsgård returns as Pennywise, the shape-shifting evil that has haunted Derry for generations.
Andy Muschietti, who directed both films, and Barbara Muschietti are also returning as executive producers. The filmmakers previously shared their excitement about continuing to explore King's terrifying fictional town.
“Continuing to explore and expand on the amazing world Stephen King created is an absolute privilege,” the Muschiettis said in a recent statement.
One of the coolest things about It: Welcome to Derry is that the series can explore different periods in the town's history while keeping Pennywise at the center of the horror.
Moving the story back to the Great Depression gives the writers another opportunity to show just how long this evil has been feeding on Derry.
There's still a bit of a wait before Season 2 arrives, but it's good to know things are moving forward. If Kane delivers on his promise of an even more terrifying chapter, Pennywise fans should have plenty to look forward to.
