IT'S ALWAYS SUNNY Star Rob McElhenney Will Direct MINECRAFT Film
We've known for a while now that a live-action film based on the wildly popular video game Minecraft was in development. Night at the Museum director Shawn Levy was attached and then bailed after Minecraft parent company Mojang didn't agree with his vision for the film, and now Mojang has announced that they've found a replacement: Rob McElhenney, the creator, writer, and star of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
While I'm excited to see what McElhenney can do behind the camera, I'm still befuddled by the concept of making a live-action Minecraft film in the first place. The boxy graphics seem to be a large part of the appeal, and translating that into live action seems almost impossible. Warner Bros. is clearly looking to capitalize on the popularity of the game (which has over 100 million users) in the same way that they made bank with The LEGO Movie, but at least with LEGO, they were able to create CG bricks that looked similar to the toys everyone knows and loves. With Minecraft, what is it physically going to even look like? We don't know, but hopefully McElhenney has a good idea cooked up.
Some of you may have seen this guy hanging around MINECON in London a couple weeks ago. He’s Rob McElhenney, and he’s going to be directing the upcoming Minecraft movie.
