There’s something hypnotic about watching someone completely in the zone, especially when that zone happens to be one of the world’s most perilous mountain roads.

A new video from BBC Earth Explore captures a jaw-dropping look at veteran Peruvian bus driver Glorioso calmly maneuvering a massive passenger bus through the razor-thin cliffs and sharp, winding paths of the Andes.

This isn’t a scenic drive for Instagram likes. It’s a survival route, where one wrong move means a sheer drop into oblivion. But for Glorioso, who’s been making this trip for over 12 years, it’s just another day on the job.

“To drive here in the Andes. You need to keep calm. You have to be strong. It’s a bit difficult,” Glorioso explains in the video.

Watching the video, the bus inches around corners that barely fit the wheels and alongside cliffs with only inches to spare. While I would be white-knucling it the whole time, the passengers seem totally unfazed.

As Glorioso’s passengers will tell you, there’s a saying around here: “It’s better to arrive a little late in this world… than early in the next.”
