Ivan Reitman Still Has Hope For the GHOSTBUSTERS Franchise and Shares His Ambitious Ideas

Even though Paul Feig's Ghostbusters reboot didn't do as well as Sony Pictures would have hoped, and Dan Aykroyd doesn't think it's feasible to make a sequel, Ivan Reitman hasn't given up on the franchise. He has hope that the franchise will continue on, and he's got some ideas on what he'd like to see happen with it in the future.

In an interview with Super News Live, Reitman said that he wants to expand the franchise and take it to a global level. He also says that he'd like to connect the new Ghostbuster reboot with the old ones. He explains:

“What we’ve been doing a lot of is thinking about the franchise rights for ‘Ghostbusters.’ Because ‘Ghostbusters,’ that idea doesn’t have to just take place in New York, it can happen over the world. I think it would be really cool to see Korean ghosts or Chinese ghosts. All those great traditions in the world have all these tales and things those people are afraid of. To have a sort of local group of Ghostbusters that tie with the head office in New York would be fun.”

“We’re doing a lot of work about where do we go next with ‘Ghostbusters.’ I think one thing that fans have clearly wanted, and so did I, that somehow we tie the worlds together. I think it was a little awkward that it wasn’t connected, and we certainly heard a lot from everybody out there. So I would definitely want to connect to all of that.”

I love the original Ghostbusters films and if Reitman could actually manage to find a way to capture that magic again it would be great! I just don't think that's possible, though. I do like his idea of taking things global. A lot of fun could be had playing with the supernatural realm of different cultures.

I'm not sure how he would tie the original films to the new ones because the surviving cast members from the original film were used as throwaway cameos in the reboot. It was a shame. I guess they could move forward as if that recent reboot never happened and start from scratch. Reitman never says the group of Ghostbusters has to be the ones from the reboot.

I guess we'll just have to wait and see what Sony Pictures ends up doing with the franchise next... if anything. One thing is for sure, Reitman hasn't given up on it.
