J. K. Simmons Confirms He Won’t Return as J. Jonah Jameson in SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY
For more than two decades, J.K. Simmons has been the definitive live action version of J. Jonah Jameson. Whether he was barking orders in Spider-Man or launching into another rant about the wall-crawler or launching into another rant about the wall-crawler, Simmons made the role completely his own. It got to the point where imagining anyone else playing Jameson just felt wrong.
That's why it came as such a fun surprise when Marvel Studios brought him back for the post-credits scene of Spider-Man: Far From Home.
Seeing Simmons step back into the role instantly connected the MCU's Spider-Man to one of the most beloved elements of Sam Raimi's original trilogy. He returned again in Spider-Man: No Way Home, making many fans assume he'd continue showing up in future films.
As it turns out, that won't be happening in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. While speaking with ComicBook to promote his new MGM+ series Westies, Simmons shut down the rumors that he'd be appearing in the upcoming Spider-Man movie.
“Not in it, dude. I don’t know who on the internet decided that that was fact, but I ain’t in it,” he said.
It's a disappointing update, especially because Jameson has always been such an essential part of Spider-Man's world. He's more than just the loud newspaper editor constantly demanding pictures of Spider-Man.
He's one of Peter Parker's most recognizable supporting characters, serving as both comic relief and a constant source of pressure in Peter's life. Whether Jameson is unintentionally helping Spider-Man or trying to ruin his reputation, he has always added a unique dynamic that few other characters can match.
With Peter now starting over after the events of No Way Home, it almost felt like the perfect opportunity to bring Jameson back into the spotlight. A fresh chapter in Peter's life could've easily included another round of Jameson blasting Spider-Man across his media empire while unknowingly making life even more difficult for the young hero.
Instead, it looks like Spider-Man: Brand New Day will be moving forward without him. Of course, Simmons saying he isn't in this movie doesn't necessarily mean we've seen the last of his version of Jameson. Maybe he’ll show up in a future film.
Even so, it's going to feel a little strange watching a Spider-Man movie without J. Jonah Jameson somewhere in the mix. The character has been woven into Spider-Man stories for decades, and Simmons elevated him into one of the most entertaining supporting characters comic book movies have ever produced.
Hopefully this is just a break for Jameson rather than a permanent farewell. Spider-Man's world just feels more complete with the character.
