Jack Black Wants to Trade Bowser for the Streets in a Live-Action YAKUZA Movie
Jack Black is already living his best video game adaptation life. Between voicing Bowser in The Super Mario Bros. Movie and stepping into the world of A Minecraft Movie, Black has been enjoying his time starring in game-inspired projects. Now he’s eyeing something completely different, and it’s kind of awesome.
The actor recently revealed that he’s interested in joining a live-action adaptation of the Yakuza franchise, the gritty crime saga from Sega, and he’s serious about it. Black told ScreenRant:
"So I'm going to throw my hat in that ring. I don't know if there [are] any parts for me, like a portly American, but talk to me. Sega, give me a jingle."
I wasn’t expecting that pitch from Black, but it’s not totally out of left field. Black has proven he can bring big personality to larger-than-life roles, and the Yakuza universe is packed with wild characters, intense drama, and just enough absurdity to make his involvement feel oddly fitting.
Yakuza centers on Japanese crime syndicates and dives deep into loyalty, betrayal, and street-level power struggles. It’s a far cry from the colorful chaos of the Mushroom Kingdom, but that contrast is exactly what makes this idea so fun to think about.
The franchise has already dipped its toes into live-action before. There was Like a Dragon: The Movie back in 2007, and more recently, Prime Video brought fans Like a Dragon: Yakuza in 2024. So the door is definitely open for more adaptations.
In the meantime, Black has returned to voice Bowser in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, which hits on April 1. The sequel is expected to expand the universe in a big way, with new characters joining the mix.
So while Black waits to see if Sega gives him that call, he’s still got plenty going on in the gaming multiverse. But, the idea of him showing up in a Yakuza story, maybe as some unexpected outsider tangled up in the chaos, sounds like something we’d absolutely watch.
Now we just wait and see if Sega picks up the phone.
